Aggies Finish Second at Amelia Island
Nov 08, 2011 | Men's Golf
After entering the day trailing by 13 strokes , the Aggies turned in a 5-under 283 to close play at an 11-under 853. A&M would eventually finish 10 shots back of North Florida (843, -21), the only two teams in the field to break par.
"We played well today, but we were not good enough to catch North Florida," head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We had the low final round but we had too many big numbers today to be a serious threat. Every time we had a chance to gain momentum, we'd lose focus and three-putt or put up a big number. North Florida has a good team, and we made too many mistakes to win against a quality opponent, especially when playing from behind."
Georgia Southern (+2) finished third, with VCU (+12) and Xavier (+23) rounding out the top five. Troy (+24) placed sixth, followed by USC Upstate (+38), Jacksonville (+39), Furman (+41), Arkansas State (+44), Wofford (+44), Winthrop (+49), Francis Marion (+51), Penn State (+55) and Elon (+67).
Junior All-American Cameron Peck was A&M's top finisher, placing third with a 5-under 211 (70-70-71). Redshirt freshman Greg Yates was again very impressive, carding a 4-under 212 (73-70-69) to place fifth overall. Senior Geoff Shaw also posted a top-10 finish, shooting a 1-under 215 (74-70-71) and finishing in a tie for seventh.
Senior All-American Jordan Russell tied for 12th at 2-over 218 (75-70-73), while sophomore Johannes Veerman placed 26th with a 6-over 222 (76-74-72).
The tournament concluded Texas A&M's fall slate, one which saw the Aggies place second or better in three of their four events. A&M claimed the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate title and also finished in the runner-up slot in the Lone Star Invitational.
"Overall, it was a good fall, and it was close to being a great fall," Higgins said. "We were two rounds from winning three tournaments, but one win and two second-place finishes give us something to build on heading into the spring."
The Aggies will return to action Feb. 15 when they open play in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Hawai'i.
