COLLEGE STATION, Texas - On a perfect Sunday afternoon, senior Alexey Grigorov and the 10th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis were almost perfect sweeping a pair of matches 7-0 from Troy and St. Edward's at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Aggie campus to run the Aggies' record to 5-1 on the year before 390 fans on Sunday while Troy falls to 0-8 and St. Edward's falls to 1-2.
Grigorov (Moscow, Russia) teamed with freshman Junior Ore (Gaithersburg, MD) at the No. 1 doubles and posted an 8-2 win over Troy's tandem of Mario Rolemberg and Branko Weber. Then Grigorov was the first singles match off in the opener beating Sami Ghorbel, 6-0, 6-1.
"This was a good day for us and we were able to play a lot of guys," Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. "It gets old playing against your teammates all of the time so it is nice to get some other guys in the lineup and is a good opportunity for them to work on some things in their games and for us to have a chance to evaluate them. This really helps the morale and the team chemistry. We will get ready to head to Seattle for the National Indoor Championships later this week."
Troy, the defending Sun Belt Conference champions, entered the match ranked No. 65 in the latest ITA rankings while St. Edward's ranked No. 15 in the Division II ITA rankings.
The Aggie lineup did not drop a set all day.
Texas A&M will depart on Wednesday for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 18-21, in Seattle, Washington. The next home match is scheduled for two weeks when the Aggies host LSU and UT-Arlington in another doubleheader.
