TAMPA, Fla. - A two-out grand slam by sophomore Meagan May vaulted the No. 22 Texas A&M softball team to a 8-0 run rule over Buffalo, Friday at the USF Softball Stadium on day one of the South Florida The Game Tournament.
"I'm excited about our kids coming back," head coach Jo Evans said. "I know we're pressing. I know we're a little anxious. We've just got to understand that it's going to come to us. Let the game come to us but still play hard."
The first run of the game came in the second inning when sophomore hurler Mel Dumezich connected for her second home run in two days. The solo bomb sailed well over the 235 feet to the center field wall for an Aggie 1-0 lead.
May had the first hit of the game, a single down the left field line in the bottom of the first that sent freshman Cassie Tysarczyk, who had reached on a walk, to second. Both runners advanced one base on an illegal pitch, but were left stranded in the inning.
In the bottom of the third, senior Rhi Kliesing sent a laser down the right field line that forced the right fielder to dive to stop the ball. Kliesing reached third on the play and picked up her second career triple, her first of the season.
The grand slam by May came in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman designated player Nicole Morgan drew a walk to lead off and was replaced at first by junior Kelsea Orsak. Sophomore Brittany Walker bounced a base hit up the middle over the head of the shortstop, giving Orsak room to reach third.
Walker stole second on the first pitch to junior Natalie Villarreal, who took first on the second walk of the inning to load the bases. With two outs May pulled a long ball down the left field line, picking up four RBI as she pushed Orsak, Walker and Villarreal home.
Morgan expanded the gap to 6-0 with a solo four-bagger in the bottom of the sixth that again cleared the wall at center. With two outs, Villarreal beat out an infield single to short. Tysarczyk followed with a second infield single, to second.
Kliesing slammed an RBI single to center field that sent Villarreal home for the 7-0 lead. With runners on the corners, May powered off another pitch, a zinger down the right field line that bounced off the top of the foul pole. May reached second for a double and scored Tysarczyk for the Aggies' eighth run, ending the game with a six-inning run rule.
Dumezich (12-4) picked up the win, tying her season-high with 10 strikeouts. She allowed one hit and no runs, facing 20 batters and walking none in six complete innings. Buffalo's Holly Johnson (2-7) drew the loss, walking three batters, fanning none and allowing six earned runs on five hits in 4.2 innings in the circle.
The Aggies will face USF later today in a 4:30 p.m. (CST) contest at the USF Softball Stadium. Follow the action live on 95.1-3 The Zone HD. For more information, log on to RadioAggieland.com or AggieAthletics.com.
