TEMPE, Arizona - A week after threatening the school record in the hammer, Texas A&M's Casey Strong recorded the top mark in Aggie history with a toss of 190 feet, 4 inches (58.02 meters).
With the effort Strong placed eighth in a competitive hammer field at the Arizona State Invitational, which continues tomorrow. Field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events start at 5 p.m.
Strong produced the second best mark in A&M history last weekend with a 188-6 mark, but added nearly two feet to his career best in surpassing the Aggie school record of 189-4 (57.70) set by Jason Jacob in 2000.
"Today my goal was to improve on last week and try to get the school record," Strong noted. "I was able to accomplish that goal and I'm very pleased. I was trying to get 60 meters today, but hopefully that will come next week.
"The hammer is a lot quicker than the weight throw indoors, and I'm pretty quick on my feet so I get the hammer form down a little better than in the weight. It helps competing in the weight throw during the whole indoor season. It prepares me for the hammer and allows me to have a good start early in the outdoor season."
In the women's pole vault Laura Asimakis and Alyson Daily both cleared 12-3.50 (3.75) to place third and fourth, respectively. The winning height was 12-9.50 (3.90) by Arizona State's Shayiah Simpson.
Colton Sandman and Dustin Phillips both cleared 15-9 (4.80) in the men's pole vault. Sandman tied for seventh place while Phillips placed 12th.
Following Strong in the hammer throw were Landon Hartwick (173-10) in 13th place and Cole Knuth (165-1) in 17th.
