DALLAS - Texas A&M's Mark Turgeon has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season by The Dallas Morning News.
The fourth-year coach led the Aggies to a 23-7 record and a tie for third in the Big 12 at 10-6. He is the only coach in school history to lead A&M to four consecutive 20-win seasons and the only one to take his team to three straight NCAA Tournaments. Turgeon is also the only Aggie coach to record three straight winning seasons in Big 12 play.
Turgeon's 96 wins are an A&M record for a coach in a four-year span and rank him only behind Larry Brown, Bill Self and Roy Williams of Kansas at Big 12 institutions.
A&M was picked sixth in the preseason coaches poll after losing its top three scorers off last year's NCAA tournament team.
Aggie sophomore Khris Middleton was a second-team selection by the publication. Middleton also earned second-team accolades from the Columbia (Mo.) Tribune and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Texas A&M opens play in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Thursday evening when the Aggies meet the Missouri/Texas Tech winner in the quarterfinal round. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. at Kansas City's Sprint Center.
