WACO -The Battle of the Brazos in men's tennis was a close match as the No. 7-ranked Baylor Bears edged the No. 6-ranked Texas A&M Aggies, 5-2, in Waco on Wednesday night to clinch the Big 12 regular-season championship. Baylor improves to 19-3 on the year and finishes league play undefeated with a 6-0 mark. A&M falls to 23-5 and 4-1 and will return to College Station to host No. 12-ranked Texas on Saturday, Apr. 23 with first serve at 1 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
"Baylor really took it to us in doubles," Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. "Partly Baylor being aggressive and partly us being on our heels and that is a bad combination against a good club like Baylor and put us in a hole."
"We were trying to gain some momentum in singles, but Jeff (Dadamo) lost a close tiebreaker and the momentum swung back toward Baylor. I thought Austin (Krajicek) and Goo (Alexis Klegou) played well tonight. When you go on the road against a quality team, you need to be 20 percent better and we were not tonight. Give Baylor credit, they did what they needed to do to win the match."
The Bears struck first winning the doubles point by taking all three doubles matches. Julian Bley and Kike Grangeiro defeated Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover, 8-4, at the No. 3 line and BU clinched the point when John Peers and Roberto Maytin, ranked No. 6 in doubles, beat the Aggies' top duo of Austin Krajicek and Jeff Dadamo, 8-4. At the No. 2 doubles, Baylor's Sergio Ramirez and Jordan Rux, ranked No. 46, defeated A&M's No. 48-ranked doubles team of Junior Ore and Alexey Grigorov, 8-5.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead as Jordan Rux defeated Alexey Grigorov, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 3 line.
A&M's Alexis Klegou, ranked No. 94, defeated No. 90-ranked Roberto Maytin of Baylor, 6-3, 7-6 (0) to cut into the Bear lead and close the gap to 2-1.
At the No. 1 line in singles, Texas A&M's senior All-American Austin Krajicek, ranked No. 19, battled Baylor's top player, John Peers who is ranked No. 17, and Krajicek came out on top with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win to square the match at two points for each side.
At the No. 2 line, the Aggies' Jeff Dadamo lost a close tiebreaker 11-9 in the first set to Sergio Ramirez before Ramirez was able to close out the match 6-3 in the second set.
The Bears would clinch the overall match when No. 97-ranked Kike Grangeiro defeated Colin Hoover, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 5 line.
The lone singles match to go three sets was the last match on the court as Dennis Lengsfeld, ranked No. 92, defeated Alberto Bautista, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to make the final score, 5-2 in the Bears favor.
