OMAHA, Neb. - Defending National Champion South Carolina got a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning from second baseman Scott Wingo to defeat Texas A&M 5-4 in the College World Series opener for both teams before 23,395 fans Sunday evening at TD Ameritrade Park.
Robert Beary led off the decisive frame with a double off the base of the wall in right field. Following a pitching change, Jackie Bradley Jr. singled to left to put runners at first and third with no outs. After a walk loaded the bases, Wingo lined a 1-2 pitch into right field to end the game.
The loss puts the Aggies (47-21) into an elimination game against California (37-22), who fell to Virginia earlier in the afternoon. A&M and Cal will square off on Tuesday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. (ESPN HD).
Until the winning tally, all eight runs were scored in the first inning--four by each team--with six of the eight being unearned.
The game got off to an auspicious start for the Aggies as an error on the second pitch of the game allowed leadoff man Tyler Naquin to reach base. The sophomore was able to round the bases for the contest's first run as he narrowly beat the throw home on an RBI single by Jacob House up the middle.
Three more unearned runs came home to make the score 4-0 Texas A&M later in the frame as the seventh man to come to bat in the inning, Brandon Wood, tripled with the bases loaded.
Wood, a sophomore from Sugar Land, Texas, has been at his best in clutch spots this season as 17 of his 28 RBI this season have come with two outs.
The unusual start to the game continued as the Gamecocks rallied back in the bottom of the first when they were aided by an A&M error and plated four runs of their own to tie the game at 4-4.
Following the high-scoring first inning, both starters settled into a groove as Stripling and South Carolina's Roth began trading zeros on the scoreboard.
Roth, the Gamecock's ace, recovered from the rocky first inning which saw USC allow four unearned runs, giving up just two more hits during his 7.1 inning outing. The lefty allowed only four knocks on the evening while striking out eight and walking five.
Stripling, meanwhile, also shook of his first inning struggles to give the Aggies a solid effort on the mound. The Southlake, Texas, put together eight solid innings on the bump to five A&M his seventh start of eight or more innings pitched in his last 10 tries.
The Aggie right-hander also notched six punch outs while only allowing one walk during his 114-pitch outing.
Texas A&M reliever Kyle Martin (2-3) took the loss as he started the pivotal ninth inning by allowing the leadoff double.
