COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M softball junior Meagan May will compete with the USA Softball Women's National Team (WNT) at the XVI Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, Oct. 14-23, the softball national governing body announced today.
"I am honored to be able to represent my country in an international event, especially one of this magnitude," May said. "I look forward to being able to play with the top athletes in the country for women's softball and I am excited for the competition that we will be facing. It will be an experience that I never forget."
May (Spring, Texas) will begin playing with Team USA on Oct. 9 when the Aggies travel to Houston to play the WNT in a doubleheader at the University of Houston's Cougar Softball Stadium. May will be on the USA Softball roster and will compete against A&M. She will also miss the Aggies' annual fall Maroon & White Game series.
The USA Women's National Team travels to Guadalajara on Oct. 14 for the Pan American Games Opening Ceremonies. The team will begin play on Oct. 17 with a game against Venezuela. Oct. 18 will feature games against Dominican Republic and Mexico, while the USA WNT will play another doubleheader the following day, vs. Cuba and Puerto Rico. Games on Oct. 20 against Canada and Oct. 21 vs. Argentina will round out the team's set schedule before playoff games begin on Oct. 22. Medal Games will end the tournament on Oct. 23.
In 2010 May began practice with the USA Softball Women's Futures National Team but was unable to compete after a car wreck cut her summer season short.
"We are excited to have Meagan join the Women's National Team for the Pan American Games," USA Softball Head Coach Ken Eriksen said. "Having Meagan in the program in the past will help her quick transition into a productive player for us."
May was named a 2010 All-American after an outstanding freshman year with the Aggies where she broke both the A&M softball and Big 12 records for home runs in a season with 24. She was also named to the all-conference first team and the NFCA All-Central Region first team. Last season the catcher missed 11 games due to injury and managed to squeeze in 37 hits, including 14 bombs, eight doubles and a triple for a .748 slugging percentage.
"It is an honor for Meagan to represent Texas A&M and the USA in the Pan American Games," Texas A&M Head Coach Jo Evans said. "It is a unique opportunity for her and we support her and wish her much success."
