Aggies Top Kats, 4-1
Feb 29, 2012 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 21 Texas A&M softball team (10-6) outhit the Bearkats 12-4 as it took a 4-1 victory Wednesday at Sam Houston State (1-10) in the final game of the two-game series between the two teams.
"Sam Houston State did a nice job," head coach Jo Evans said. "I thought they had some great plays. We hit the ball hard and they're a team that shows up to play and I think their coaches could be proud of their effort today. Our hitters did a good job of being aggressive. They looked good at the plate and they attacked the ball."
Back-to-back home runs by juniors Sydney Shannon and Mel Dumezich gave the Aggies an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second. In the bottom of the inning, the Bearkats scored on a sacrifice fly out to left field to narrow the gap to 2-1, but couldn't go any further as the Aggies held their lead.
In the top of the third sophomore Emily Albus bunted and beat the throw to first for a leadoff single before a sacrifice bunt sent her to second. Junior Meagan May singled through the right side to score Albus for second and stretch the A&M lead to 3-1. A single through the right side by Shannon put runners on the corners before Dumezich got a piece of a pitch and sent it over the fence in right, threatening to plate three runs. SHSU right fielder Erin Burford was ready, though, and snagged the ball as it topped the wall to end the inning.
Senior Kelsea Orsak hit a shot into center field in the top of the fourth for a double that put two runners in scoring position. The Aggies couldn't capitalize, however, and kept a 3-1 lead.
May hit her second single of the day in the top of the fifth and was joined in the base hit category by sophomore Nicole Morgan in the top of the sixth to bring the Aggies' hit tally to 10.
The top of the seventh also proved productive for the Aggies as they took their final 4-1 lead. Junior Brittany Walker led off with a single through the left side and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. May, who was 3-for-4 on the day, sent a single to right-center to score Walker.
Sam Houston State was unable to produce a run in the final five innings as the Aggies improved to 10-6 on the season.
Dumezich (5-4) picked up the win after throwing nine strikeouts and giving up one earned run on four hits. SHSU's Meme Quinn (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up four earned runs on 12 hits.
