No. 21 A&M Blanks Marist, 5-0
Mar 15, 2012 | Softball
HONOLULU, Hawaii - The 21st-ranked Texas A&M softball team (17-8) finished the day off well with a 5-0 shutout of Marist (6-10) on day one of Hawaii's Chevron Spring Fling Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
"It was nice to see our kids come out and get after it," head coach Jo Evans said. "The first game was disappointing and it was nice to see us come out and get the job done."
The Aggies quickly bounced back from an earlier loss to top-ranked Cal and took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Junior Mel Dumezich led off with a walk and was sent to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Sydney Shannon. With one out, sophomore Cassie Tysarczyk hit a home run over left field to push a pair of runs in.
Sophomore Taran Tyler lasered a double down the right field line and sophomore Amber Garza found the same spot with a triple to send Tyler home for the 3-0 lead. With Garza on third, senior Kelsea Orsak used a sacrifice fly out to center field to expand the Aggies' lead to 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, Tysarczyk had her second big hit of the day, a triple down the right field line. The sophomore posed on third before running home for the 5-0 lead on an error by the left fielder that put Tyler on first. Tyler took second on a single to right field by Garza, her second hit of the game, before going to third on a sacrifice bunt by Orsak, her second sacrifice hit of the game. Garza and Tyler were both left stranded on the third out.
Garza and Tyler each reached third in the top of the sixth but Tyler was thrown out at home and Garza was left on base. Tyler reached on her second double of the day, a zinger down the left field line that slammed into the outfield wall.
Marist had only three hits on the day, compared to 10 by the Aggies, and the Red Foxes committed two errors.
Senior Lindsey Sisk (5-3) threw seven innings, fanning six batters and walking five while giving up no runs on three hits for her first shutout victory of the season. Marist's Melanie White (1-4) gave up five earned runs on 10 hits for the loss.
"Lindsey is way too hard on herself," Evans said. "She's way too critical. When you have those thoughts on yourself, it's a battle every day. She's a kid that has everything she needs and she just needs to believe in it. She had a lot of good pitches today and I hope that she sees that."
