Aggies End Big 12 with Five-Inning No-Hitter
May 06, 2012 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Aggie pitchers Mel Dumezich and Lindsey Sisk combined for a no-hitter as the No. 16 Texas A&M softball team (36-16, 16-8 Big 12) run-ruled Kansas (31-20, 6-17 Big 12), 9-0 in five innings in the Aggies' final home game of the regular season at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The Aggies swept the series with Kansas, 3-0, and finish conference play with a 16-8 mark. A&M dropped just two Big 12 series this season and swept two. Today was the Aggies' final Big 12 game as they head to the Southeastern Conference in 2013.
The three A&M seniors, Kelsea Orsak, Natalie Villarreal and Sisk, had big games, each reaching on every at bat and combining for four hits and three runs while Sisk helped Dumezich with a no-hitter.
A three-run homer by sophomore Cassie Tysarczyk shoved the Aggies out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Junior Brittany Walker sliced a single into shallow center field and was joined on base by junior Meagan May, who drew a walk, before Tysarczyk went yard over right-center field with a ball that ricocheted off of the scoreboard.
The Aggies plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second to extend the lead to five runs. Villarreal led off with an infield single and took second on an error as Orsak reached on a fielder's choice. The second baseman was 2-for-2 on the day with two runs scored.
A throwing error that put May on first scored Villarreal before Orsak went home on an RBI walk by sophomore Amber Garza.
Another two runs in the bottom of the third pulled A&M out to a 7-0 lead over the Jayhawks. Sophomore Nicole Morgan led off with a single to left and was replaced on the base paths by sophomore Allison Garrett. The pinch runner flew to third on a double down the right-field line by Villarreal before the pair scored on an RBI single by Orsak.
A solo home run over left field by Dumezich in the bottom of the fourth stretched the lead to 8-0. Dumezich was 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored.
With one out, Morgan drew a walk and was replaced at first by sophomore Jenna Stark. Junior pinch hitter Sydney Shannon singled to right-center before an RBI single to left by Sisk plated Stark for the 9-0 run.
Kansas had no answer, with only four runners reaching base on no hits, and the Aggies ended the 2012 conference season with a 9-0 run-rule shutout on a combined no-hitter by Sisk and Dumezich.
Dumezich (26-11) took the win, throwing five strikeouts in three perfect innings in the circle. Sisk walked one batter and fanned two in two innings of work. Kansas starter Alicia Pille (17-12) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk in 1/3 innings pitched.
The Aggies travel to Boise, Idaho, next weekend to play Boise State in a three-game series, the Aggies' final three games of the regular season. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com or follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
