COLLEGE STATION--Ten days after the original starting date of the Aggies' 2012 season, the Kevin Sumlin era at Texas A&M begins with a 2:30 p.m. battle against the Florida Gators on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Kyle Field. The Aggies' original season-opener vs. Louisiana Tech in Shreveport, La., on Aug. 30 was postponed to Oct. 13 due to Hurricane Isaac.

ESPN'S COLLEGE GAMEDAY COMES TO AGGIELAND
Texas A&M's historic Simpson Drill Field will be the site of ESPN College GameDay this Saturday as the Aggies host their inaugural football game in the Southeastern Conference against the Florida Gators. The weekly College GameDay show begins at 8 a.m. CT on ESPNU, then continues at 9 a.m. CT on ESPN.
The site will give ESPN's national television audience a scenic view of The Zone at Kyle Field, overlooking the newly renovated Memorial Student Center. This is GameDay's third overall visit to Aggieland for ESPN's popular college football pregame show, now in its 26th season. The two previous visits: Nov. 4, 2006 (No. 18 Oklahoma def. No. 21 Texas A&M, 17-16) and Nov. 11, 2000 (No. 1 Oklahoma def. No. 24 Texas A&M, 35-31).
ESPN senior coordinating producer Lee Fitting said, “Anytime you can showcase one of the great traditional venues in college football and then add the intrigue of Texas A&M hosting a national power like Florida in its SEC debut, you pack up the trucks and go there.”
ESPN talent making the trek to Texas A&M this weekend include GameDay host Chris Fowler, analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and David Pollack, and host/reporter Samantha Steele. Brent Musburger, Herbstreit and reporter Heather Cox will call the Gators vs. Aggies game at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Texas A&M's new GameDay commercial, featuring the time-honored Midnight Yell tradition, began airing Monday, Sept. 3, across all ESPN networks. The spot follows a nationwide voting contest, “Bring GameDay To Your Campus,” that allowed fans of 124 FBS schools to vote to bring a College GameDay commercial shoot to their campus. Nearly a million votes were tabulated during the 10-day contest, with Texas A&M emerging as the victor. ESPN filmed the Midnight Yell spot in College Station in late July.
SUMLIN ERA OPENS AGAINST SEC FOE FLORIDA
- Kevin Sumlin will be coaching his first game as head coach at Texas A&M after spending the past four seasons at the University of Houston. It won't be Sumlin's first time coaching in Kyle Field after serving as an assistant head coach with the Aggies in 2001-02. Additionally, he made trips to College Station with the Oklahoma Sooners in 2004 and 2006.
- With the Louisiana Tech game postponement came a rare season-opening matchup for the Aggies. The Aggies will face a conference opponent in a season-opener for the first time since 1967 and for just the third time in program history when Will Muschamp's Gators come to College Station. The Aggies beat then Southwest Conference opponent Southwestern 6-0 in 1916 and fell to SMU 20-17 in 1967.
- The Aggies and Gators have played just twice previously with the Gators winning 42-6 in Gainesville in 1962 and the Aggies taking a 37-14 Sun Bowl win over UF on Jan. 2, 1977. The trip to El Paso for the Sun Bowl was one of Florida's rare forays to the Lone Star State. The Gators are 1-7-2 in games played in the state of Texas with their most recent game being the 1982 Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston (28-24 loss to Arkansas).
- The Gators will be the fourth team from the state of Florida to play at Kyle Field. The Aggies are 1-2 in the previous games with a 27-20 win over FIU in 2010, and losses to Florida State in 1967 (19-18) and Miami (Fla.) in 2008 (41-23).
ABOUT SUMLIN'S A&M DEBUT
- In Kevin Sumlin's debut game at the University of Houston, the Cougars logged a 55-3 win over Southern on Aug. 30, 2008.
- Thanks to Hurricane Isaac, Sumlin is the seventh straight Aggie head coach to debut in the friendly confines of Kyle Field.
- Texas A&M head coaches have compiled a 17-9-1 record in their debut games with the Aggies.

RECORD-SETTING OFFENSE MEETS SUMLIN
- The 2011 edition of the Texas A&M offense demolished its season records for passing, total and scoring.
- The 2012 edition, which returns eight starters from 2011, is now directed by first-year Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin, whose University of Houston offenses have been dominating the NCAA statistical rankings the past four seasons.
- Sumlin's Cougars led the NCAA FBS in total, passing and scoring offense in two of his four seasons, and ranked in the top five of the three categories nine times (of a possible 12).
- Since the Aggies switched to an up-tempo, no-huddle offensive scheme in 2009, only Oklahoma has averaged more plays than Texas A&M. Over the past three seasons, the Aggies have averaged 80.3 plays per game which was just behind OU's 81.7 and just ahead of Texas Tech's 79.8 and Houston's 78.7 plays per game.
- Last season's A&M offense averaged 80.3 plays per game, just behind OU's 80.9 plays per game.
- In the 39 games since the scheme shift, the Aggies have generated 500 or more yards of total offense 18 times, including six times in 2011.
- Of Sumlin's offense, senior center Patrick Lewis said: “With this offense they want 100 to 115 snaps. Anything to get more plays and more scoring opportunities.”

TEXAS A&M IN HOME OPENERS
The Aggies are traditionally tough to beat in their home opener. The Aggies are 25-2 (92.6 winning percentage) since 1985, which includes a 20-game winning streak from 1988-2007. Since 1985, the Aggies have notched wins over LSU (four times), SMU (twice), Louisiana-Lafayette (twice), Tulsa (twice), Wyoming (twice), North Texas (twice), UTEP, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Sam Houston, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Arkansas State, The Citadel, Montana State, New Mexico, Stephen F. Austin and Northeast Louisiana.

Texas A&M has won its last five season-openers that featured opposition from the Southeastern Conference.

In all season-opening games against SEC opponents, the Aggies are 8-11. Prior to the five-game winning streak, the Aggies were 3-11 against the SEC in season-openers with wins over Ole Miss (twice) and Kentucky, and 11 losses to LSU (all in Baton Rouge, La.).

BIG CROWDS AT KYLE FIELD
Texas A&M enters SEC play with an eight-game streak of sellouts at Kyle Field, which is a school record. A&M's sellout streak dated back to the 2010 Nebraska game, which set the Kyle Field record with an attendence of 90,079. Kyle Field was filled to 105.0 percent capacity in 2011 and the average attendance of 87,183 broke the previous high by over 4,000 fans per game.

FRESHMAN MANZIEL SET TO MAKE HISTORIC START
Redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel won the Aggies' starting quarterback job in August camp and is set to become the first freshman QB to start an A&M season-opener since 1944. The Aggies have not had a freshman QB starter in the season-opener since freshmen became eligible in 1972, but used freshman signal-callers during World War II.
According to The Associated Press story that ran in the Sept. 24 edition of The Dallas Morning News, freshman Jimmie Cashion of College Station started at quarterback and helped the Aggies overcome seven fumbles on the way a 39-0 win over the Bryan Army Airfield Ducks. The AP said of Cashion: “Born on the Aggie campus and an unofficial member of the Aggies all his life, Cashion looked exceptionally good at quarterback and his passing left nothing to be desired.” The Aggies also used a freshman QB in 1943 when James Hallmark helped the famed “Kiddie Corps” to a berth in the Orange Bowl against LSU.
Manziel, a record-setting schoolboy QB at Kerrville Tivy High School, was an early enrollee to A&M and joined the Aggies in January 2011 and went through spring drills that year. He also earned a spot on A&M's travel roster while redshirting last year.

SWOPE SETS SIGHTS ON RECEIVING RECORDS
- After breaking A&M's single season receptions record in back-to-back seasons, senior wide receiver Ryan Swope enters 2012 in range of most of the career receiving standard in the Aggies' record book.
- For his career, Swope has 180 catches for 2,204 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is within 53 catches and 888 yards of his receiving counterpart for the past three years, Jeff Fuller, who grabbed 233 receptions for 3,092 yards and 34 touchdowns from 2008-11.
- Swope posted a school record with six 100-yard receiving games last season, and has nine for his career (ties for school record with Fuller).
- He set another school record with four touchdown receptions against Baylor in 2011. His 206 receiving yards (on 11 catches) against the Bears was the fifth 200-yard game in A&M history.
- A second-team All-Big 12 pick last year, Swope is the SEC's leading active pass catcher in receptions, receiving yards and receiving TDs.
- Easily the team leader in offensive 20-yard plays last year with 16, including seven 20-yard plus TD plays.
- Was a running back at Austin Westlake High School, but lined up at WR from day one at Texas A&M.
- Aggies are 7-2 in Swope's 100-yard receiving games, and are 8-4 when he has 8 or more catches.

PASS-RUSHERS ON THE PROWL
The Aggies posted a NCAA FBS-best 51 quarterback sacks (3.92 per game) in 2011, and the top two pass rushers are back for the Aggies' first season in the Southeastern Conference. Senior SEAN PORTER, a first-team All-Big 12 pick by the Associated Press, ranked No. 16 nationally with .73 sacks per game (9.5 total), while junior DAMONTRE MOORE ranked No. 21 with .71 per game (8.5). Texas A&M is the only team in the nation with two returning players that ranked in the top 25 in QB sacks last year.
PROTECTING THE PASSER
Texas A&M was one of the nation's best at protecting the passer last season with just nine take-downs of future NFL first-round pick Ryan Tannehill in 13 games, which ranked No. 4 in the NCAA FBS. Four of the five members of the Aggies' 2011 offensive front return in 2012, including All-America candidate bookend tackles LUKE JOECKEL and JAKE MATTHEWS and veteran center PATRICK LEWIS (team-high 35 starts).
Despite attempting an average of over 41 passes per game last season, the Aggie offensive front was flagged for holding just twice and haven't been called for holding since the second game of 2011.
HARRIS TO THE HOUSE
Two of the nation's most dangerous punt returners in 2011 resided in the SEC with Joe Adams of Arkansas and Tyrann Mathieu of LSU, but the NCAA leader was in College Station. Senior DUSTIN HARRIS was the NCAA statistical champ with an average of 18.6 yards on 18 punt returns with one touchdown. Harris also set a school record for single-game punt return yards when he gained 162 yards on three tries against Kansas, including a 72-yard TD burst.

CHRISTINE MICHAEL RETURNS
- Christine Michael's first name is pronounced: CHRIS-tin, not Christian or chris-TEEN
- Michael's last two seasons have been cut short due to season-ending injuries. He broke his right leg in game 8 in 2010 (vs. Texas Tech) and tore his left ACL in game 9 in 2011 (vs. Oklahoma).
- Perhaps the team's hardest worker, Michael was far ahead of his projected rehabilitation schedule. During spring drills, new head coach Kevin Sumlin had to monitor Michael to make sure he wasn't doing too much. At the time Sumlin said: “I had to tell him to go sit down, and I look back up and he's back in there. I'm going to have to have a meeting with him, but a good meeting. He wants to play.”
- Despite missing nine games the past two seasons due to season-ending injuries, Michael is the SEC's leading active rusher with 2,374 career yards.
- Has nine career 100-yard plus rushing games, including four in nine games last season. Aggies are 7-2 in games when C-Mike rushes for 100-plus yards.
- His 2,374 career rushing yards rank No. 14 in school history.
- Was well on his way to his first 1,000-yard season in 2011 with 899 yards in nine games, including a monster 32-carry, 230-yard, three-TD effort against Arkansas.

WILLIAMS WAIVER DENIED
The waiver application submitted by Texas A&M on behalf of sophomore running back Brandon Williams, who transferred to Texas A&M from Oklahoma, was denied by the NCAA. The initial appeal was submitted and denied by the NCAA staff. Texas A&M appealed the staff decision on August 7 and the subcommittee for legislative relief denied the appeal on August 22. “We appreciate the NCAA's consideration of our appeal in the case of Brandon Williams,” Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin said. “We knew this was a possibility and Brandon will continue to work out with our team and help our team get better. We look forward to him playing in maroon and white in 2013.”
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
- In addition to breaking in a new quarterback, the Aggies will be using a placekicker not named RANDY BULLOCK for the first time since 2008. The 2011 All-American and Lou Groza Placekicker Award winner has attempted A&M's last 80 field goals since winning the job early in his freshman season.
- Senior DT JONATHAN MATHIS and senior RB CHRISTINE MICHAEL will be seeing his first live action since their 2011 seasons were cut short by injuries. Mathis started the first three games at DE in 2011, while Michael went down in game nine.
- Sophomore BEN COMPTON will be making his offensive line debut after doing a solid job on the defensive front last season. Recruited as an OL, Compton lined up at NG in 2011 due to depth concerns.
- Projected OL starters have a combined 92 career starts. Leading the way is senior C PATRICK LEWIS with 35, followed by OT LUKE JOECKEL (26), OT JAKE MATTHEWS (20), OG CEDRICK OGBUEHI (6) and OG JARVIS HARRISON (5). Backup SHEP KLINKE also has three starts under his belt. Lewis, a Rimington Trophy watch lister, reports that the group calls themselves the MAROON GOONS.
- Senior linebacker SEAN PORTER enters the Florida game just five tackles short of 200 career tackles, making him the No. 2 active tackler in the SEC behind DARREN BATES of Auburn.
- The Aggies have three players among the SEC's career active statistical leaders: senior RB CHRISTINE MICHAEL with 2,374 rushing yards, senior WR RYAN SWOPE with 180 catches for 2,204 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns; and senior return specialist DUSTIN HARRIS with 553 punt return yards.
- Entering 2012, Texas A&M and LSU were the only teams in the SEC without a QB on the roster with at least one previous start.
- Texas A&M will start the season on a winning streak for the first time since 2002. The Aggies beat Northwestern 33-22 in the 2011 Meinecke Car Care Bowl of Texas.
- The only Texas A&M QB to throw for 300-plus yards in a season-opener is JERROD JOHNSON, who did it twice. He threw for 349 against New Mexico in 2009 and 322 against Stephen F. Austin in 2010. The SEC record for passing yards in a season opener is 498 by Kentucky's TIM COUCH against Louisville in 1988.
- A&M's rushing record for a season-opener is 229 by LEELAND MCELROY against LSU in 1995. The SEC record is 290 yards by BO JACKSON in Auburn's 1985 lidlifter against Louisiana-Lafayette.
AGGIES-GATORS CONNECTIONS
- First-year Director of Football Sports Performance LARRY JACKSON and Florida defensive line coach BRYANT YOUNG were on opposing sidelines for the 1993 and 1994 Cotton Bowls, which pitted Texas A&M and Notre Dame in back-to-back seasons.
- Former Texas A&M defensive coordinator GARY DARNELL (2006-07) also served as UF's defensive coordinator from 1988-89. Darnell was A&M's interim head coach for the 2007 Alamo Bowl, and served as Florida's interim coach for the final seven games of the 1989, including the Freedom Bowl.
PRO DADS
The 2012 Texas A&M football roster has a trio of players with fathers who were accomplished professionals in the NFL or NBA.
- BRUCE MATTHEWS / SONS JAKE AND MIKE: The father of Aggie offensive linemen Jake and Mike Matthews, Bruce, was a perennial All-Pro offensive lineman for the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007. The elder Matthews currently coaches Jake and Mike's older brother, Kevin, with the Tennessee Titans. Kevin Matthews was the Aggies' starter at center in 2008 and 2009.
- ED NEALY / SON SPENCER: Senior defensive lineman Spencer Nealy's dad, Ed, was an All-Big Eight forward at Kansas State and played 10 seasons in the NBA, including with the 1992-93 Chicago Bulls that won the NBA title.
- ROD HARRIS / DE'VANTE HARRIS: True freshman cornerback De'Vante Harris' father, Rod, was an accomplished return specialist for three NFL teams and compiled over 150 punt and kickoff returns during his pro career.
