No. 4 Alabama Evens Series with No. 9 A&M, 6-2
Mar 30, 2013 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 9 Texas A&M softball team dropped a 6-2 decision to fourth-ranked Alabama, Saturday at the Aggie Softball Complex. The loss evened the series at 1-1 for the Aggies (28-6, 5-5 SEC), who took game one from the Crimson Tide (31-5, 7-4 SEC). The rubber match is set for noon tomorrow.
A&M was only able to get four hits off of a stingy Alabama defense, and left 13 runners on base through seven innings. Freshman Cali Lanphear had the team's only RBI hit of the game, pounding a two-run home run over left-centerfield in the bottom of the sixth.
The Crimson Tide had seven hits on the day, including two solo home runs and a two-RBI double. An RBI hit-by-pitch and an RBI walk in the top of the second started the scoring after the bases were loaded on a hit-by-pitch, an infield single and a walk.
A&M loaded the bases twice, in the first and sixth innings, but was unable to capitalize on the chances. In the bottom of the sixth after Lanphear's homer, the tying run stepped up to the plate three times after juniors Amber Garza, Taran Tyler and Emily Albus loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a perfectly-placed bunt single.
Juniors Nicole Morgan and Jenna Stark also had base hits for A&M, in the third and seventh innings, respectively. Stark's single came with no outs and junior Cassie Tysarczyk on base after she reached on a walk. Alabama reliever Jackie Traina threw three-straight strikeouts, however to end the game.
Senior Mel Dumezich (19-3) started and finished the game, giving up three earned runs on five hits and four walks in five innings of work. Aggie freshman Kristen Davenport saw time in the circle, giving up one earned run on two hits in two innings of relief. Alabama starter Leslie Jury (11-2) earned the win after allowing two earned runs on two hits and nine walks while striking out two in five innings.
The Aggies and Crimson Tide will play the rubber match tomorrow at noon Central. Few tickets remain for that game. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
