Humphreys, a senior from Laredo, Texas, suffered a broken rib and torn abdominal muscles on one of his throws in a meet in Finland. The IAAF World Championships will be contested in Moscow, Russia Aug. 10-18.
“It's a tough, tough break for Sam,” Aggie head track and field coach Pat Henry said. “He will bounce back from this injury, but it won't be in time for the World Championships. It just proves that the javelin is the toughest event in track and field.”
Humphreys had qualified for the World Championships by placing second at the USATF Championships with a World Championships B standard throw of 272-9 (83.14m), which broke his own school record. It was Humphrey's first time to qualify for an international team. Humphreys was the 2012 Olympic Trials champion and the 2013 NCAA Champion in the javelin.
