ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Texas A&M men's golf team wrapped up its fall schedule Sunday at the Golf Club of Georgia, finishing the U.S. Collegiate Championship in ninth place.
The Aggies (281-289-293=863) compiled a team score of 293 during the tournament's final round to end the weekend at one-under par.
Senior Greg Yates (72-73-66=211, -5) turned in his lowest round of the season during Sunday's final turn on the course, collecting seven birdies on the day to card a 66. The Mansfield, Texas, native entered the day in 22nd place but ascended the leaderboard with his strong round to finish in eighth place and notch his 12th career top-10 showing.
“We let a great opportunity slip through our fingers today,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “Greg stepped up with a great final round but it was just wasted by sloppy mistakes and poor decisions.”
Texas (278-288-277=843) wrapped up the team title at 21-under par for the three-day event, with Virginia, LSU, Wake Forest and UCLA rounding out the top five. The Cavaliers' Derek Bard (66-71-64=201, -15) took home individual medalist honors.
Junior Adrià Arnaus (69-71-75=215, -1) continued his strong fall for the Aggies as the Barcelona, Spain, native tied for 19th to card his third top-20 placing of the semester.
A duo of A&M golfers, Andrew Lister (70-72-77=219, +3) and Andrew Paysse (70-74-75=219, +3), shared 39th place, while rookie Connor Black (74-73-78=225, +9) tied for 62nd.
“The boys fought hard but at some point you have to do more that try, you have to execute,” Higgins added. “We saw a glimpse of what we can be and we will try to build on that in the spring.”
The Aggies will return to the links Feb. 2-3 when they take part in the Sea Best Invitational which will be held on iconic TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
