PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The Texas A&M men's golf team climbed three spots on the leaderboard Tuesday at the Sea Best Invitational to finish the event in sixth place.
“The conditions were tough out there today,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “There was a north wind with the pins in the positions that they use for the tour event here. Overall, it was tougher conditions and a tougher set up, but we played better. I'm really proud of the guys for that. We moved up the leaderboard a little bit which is always important. It's a process and we're getting better. We've got to continue making gains and keep moving in the right direction.”
The Aggies (305-300-296=901, +61) turned in their lowest team round of the tournament on their final run through the Dye's Valley Course at TPC at Sawgrass after beginning the day in ninth place. North Carolina, meanwhile, claimed the team title at 33-over par.
“Overall, today was a positive and we'll head home and get ready for the next one,” Higgins added.
Freshman Cameron Champ (75-70-77=222, +12) was the highest-placing Aggie on the individual leaderboard, earning a share of 15th place while teammate Adrià Arnaus (76-77-71=224, +14) was just two shots back in 21st.
Third-year Aggie Ben Crancer (78-77-74=229, +19) ascended the standings 15 spots Tuesday to end play in a tie for 36th. Freshman Andrew Paysse (77-80-74=231, +21) and senior Greg Yates (77-76-80=233, +23) rounded out the A&M contingency at the event in 43rd and 55th place, respectively.
“The guys did a much better job today and were much more focused,” Higgins said. “They kept the ball in play off the tee better today and gave us a chance to put up a decent round. Adria (Arnaus) had a fantastic round. Ben (Crancer) and Andrew (Paysse) were really solid and finished well for us.”
Playing as an individual, Andrew Lister (74-77-80=231, +21) also shared 43rd place.
Texas A&M men's golf is back in action Feb. 18-20 when it travels to Kauai, Hawai'i, to take part in the John A. Burns Invitational.
