VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – The Texas A&M men's golf team wrapped up its fourth event of the fall semester Tuesday by carding a ninth-place finish at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
“This was a disappointing showing,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “We finished poorly yesterday but we actually played better even though we had a lower score today. The guys fought hard today, but we really couldn't get any putts to drop. We've gotten away from the type of golf we usually play.”
Competing for the second straight day at the Old Overton Country Club, the Aggies (290-290-288=868) finished the event at 28-over par while tournament host Alabama (268-285-277=830, -10) was crowed the team champion.
“We're usually a very aggressive, attacking golf team and right now we're playing kind of fearful and trying not to make mistakes,” Higgins added. “That's no way to attack a golf course. We've got some things to work on and we're going to get back and go to work.”
Senior Greg Yates (72-71-72= 215) and junior Andrew Lister (71-73-71=215) each finished the event at five-over par to earn a share of 21st place and highlight the five-man A&M contingency at the event.
Junior Adrià Arnaus (76-73-69=218, +8) carded his lowest round of the tournament Tuesday, firing a one-under par 69 to earn a share of 27th place.
Freshman Andrew Paysse (71-73-76=220, +10) finished the event in a tie for 34th while junior Ben Crancer (80-76-76=232, +22) held 57th place after 54 holes.
Mississippi State's Ben Wood (71-63-64=198 -12), who carded the tournament's lowest round (63) on Monday, followed that performance with a third-round 64 Tuesday to claim individual medalist honors.
The Texas A&M men's golf team will see its next action and conclude its fall schedule Oct. 17-19 when it travels to Alpharetta, Ga., for the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
