
Aggies Drop Series Opener at Fresno State, 5-0

FRESNO, California – The Texas A&M Aggies managed just two hits in a 5-0 loss to the Fresno State Bulldogs in the first game of a doubleheader at Beiden Field on Saturday afternoon.
Texas A&M (7-2) allowed the leadoff man to reach base for Fresno State in each of the first five innings. The Aggies were able to escape unscathed in the first three innings, but the Bulldogs finally drew blood in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Fresno State's Trent Woodward led off the fourth inning by hitting a fading liner. Aggie rightfielder Nick Banks gloved the ball on a charging slide but it popped loose when his mitt his knees, allowing Woodward to reach on the single. The Fresno State catcher moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Taylor Ward drove a single through the left side of the infield. JB Moss' throw to home arrived in time to retire Woodward at the plate, but it alluded Troy Stein's glove, allowing Ward to move to second. With two outs, Jesse Medrano singled to rightfield to push Ward across for the 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jesse Mariscal and Taylor Tempel were both hit by pitches to start the frame. Jordan Luplow hit a double to the warning track in leftfield, scoring Mariscal for the 3-0 advantage. Two wild pitches during an at-bat by Woodward scored Tempel and Luplow for the 5-0 edge.
Daniel Mengden (1-2) suffered the loss in an uncharacteristic outing. He allowed five runs on seven hits, one walk, three wild pitches and two hit batters in 7.0 innings of work.
Jordan Brink (2-0) earned the win for the Bulldogs. He blanked the Aggies over 7.0 innings, scattering one hit and three walks while striking out five.
Logan Nottebrok and Hunter Melton accounted for A&M's lone hits.
Ward led Fresno State's offense going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
The Aggies and Bulldogs face off in game two of the doubleheader that started at 6:45 pm CT on Saturday.
