LIHUE, Hawaii – The Texas A&M men's golf team stands in fourth place, just eight shots off the lead, after 36 holes at the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course.
“The guys really hung in there today against some tough conditions,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “There were 25-30 mile-per-hour winds that really gave the course some teeth.”
The Aggies (288-293=581, +5) were five-over during the second round and will enter Friday's final 18 holes trying to chase down team leader California (282-291=573, -3).
The individual leaderboard features three Aggies in the top 10, headlined by junior Adrià Arnaus (70-72=142, -2), who was even par on the day to hold a share of sixth place. Freshman Connor Black (72-73=145, +1) and senior Greg Yates (71-74=145, +1) will both enter the final round tied for ninth in the player standings.
“We've got three guys in the top 10 and we're in contention, playing in the final group,” Higgins added. “We're doing all the things we talk about wanting to do at the beginning of a tournament to give ourselves a chance to win. We're in good position, we just need to go out and have a great final round.”
Freshmen Cameron Champ (75-74=149, +5) and Andrew Paysse (78-77=155, +11) round out the A&M lineup in ties for 27th and 66th, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Aggies have three more players competing in the field as individuals - junior Andrew Lister (77-72=149, +5) in 27th place, sophomore Jake Goodman (78-73=151, +7) in 39th, and junior Ben Crancer (80-82=162, +18) in 88th.
