COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The Texas A&M men's swimming and diving team got off to a strong start on day one of the Art Adamson Invitational on Thursday at the Student Recreation Natatorium.
An impressive effort in the 200-yard IM saw the Aggies log six NCAA 'B' cuts. Sophomore Brock Bonetti led the pack with a second-place finish in 1:47.29 followed closely by freshman Angel Martinez (1:47.35, 3rd) and freshman Mateo Gonzalez (1:47.80, 5th). Sophomore transfer Austin Van Overdam recorded a 'B' cut time of 1:48.65 in the consolation final, and senior Antoine Marc (1:48.29) and sophomore Mauro Castillo (1:48.39) posted 'B' cuts in the bonus final. Sophomore Jonathan Tybur rounded out the Championship final leaderboard with an eighth place finish (1:51.92).
The one-meter diving finals saw three Aggies among the top five finishers. Freshman Sam Thornton took second with a score of 366.30 and sophomore Tyler Henschel was third with a 358.95. Freshman Skylar Lake also surpassed 300 points with a 322.20 point total for fifth place.
In the 50-yard freestyle, junior Jacob Gonzales led the way with a fifth place finish in the Championship final in a time of 20.27. The Aggies put a trio of swimmers in the consolation final: junior Turker Ayar (20.53), sophomore Justin Morey (20.57) and redshirt freshman Steven Richardson (20.90).
Freshman Angel Martinez took seventh place in the 400 free, clocking in at 4:30.82.
The Aggies opened and closed day one with strong showings in the relays. To begin the night's finals, Texas A&M finished fourth in the 200 free relay (1:20.24) behind Gonzales, Ayar, Richardson and sophomore Justin Morey. The Aggies closed out the night with a third-place effort in the 400 medley relay with the foursome of Bonetti, Castillo, Gonzalez and Gonzales finishing in 3:12.21.
