Mar 15, 2015 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION – The No. 9 Texas A&M men's tennis team split a pair of matches Sunday afternoon at the George P Mitchell Tennis Center against No. 4 Illinois and Abilene Christian. The Illini handed the Aggies their second home loss on the season in the noon matchup 4-2, but the home team bounced back to defeat the Wildcats 6-1 in the night cap.
The maroon and white claimed both doubles points on the day with wins from No. 9 Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant and No. 26 Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo over their Illini counterparts. Efferding and Szabo came back in the night cap for win number two on the day, freshman duo AJ Catanzariti and Arthur Rinderknech put the first point on the board in the ACU match.
No. 89 Catanzariti posted a pair of singles wins on Sunday, defeating Blake Bazarnik of Illinois, dropping just three points and giving the Aggies their second point in their only singles victory against the country's fourth-ranked team. The Pennsylvanian played even better against Abilene Christian's Nico Agritelley, winning 6-0, 6-1 in under an hour.
Szabo put the Aggies ahead 3-0 against ACU following his pair of doubles wins, defeating Paul Domanski 6-1, 6-2 on court four. Shortly after Szabo's win, sophomore Max Lunkin clinched the team victory besting Guilherme Gesser 6-1, 6-4 on court five.
The Aggies final two points of the day came from freshman Jordi Arconada and sophomore Frankie Colunga. Arconada backed up his first win in the maroon and white on Friday with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jason Proctor. Colunga, a College Station native, overpowered Henry Adams 6-3, 7-5 on court three.
The Wildcats lone point came from Marco Bensley over Max Montague on court six. The A&M freshman nearly forced a third set falling 6-3, 7-5 to the ACU sophomore.
The Aggies will hit the road for the second time in SEC play next weekend, travelling to take on No. 42 Mississippi State Friday in Starkville followed by a Sunday date with No. 66 Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
