NAPLES, Fla. – Junior Adrià Arnaus carded the third top-five finish of his career on Monday as the Aggie junior led the Texas A&M men's golf team to a fourth-place showing at the Talis Park Challenge.
“Adrià is playing outstanding golf,” Aggie head coach J.T. Higgins said. “He hit a ball out of bounds on his seventh hole of the day, a reachable par-five, and ended up make a good bogie, but that shot probably hurt him more than anything else. He put together a really great tournament and carried us on his back all week. He's really having a phenomenal season.”
Arnaus (66-69-73=208, -5) fell narrowly short of claiming his first collegiate win as he ended the event in a tie for second, just a single stroke behind medalist Chris Selfridge of Toledo (-6). The Barcelona native was two-over on the day, carding his 11th birdie of the tournament on the par-five 15th hole.
In the team standings, the Aggies (284-283-291=858, +6) were the third of four SEC schools in the top four spots on the leaderboard as LSU (-14) took home team champion honors with Vanderbilt (-10) just four shots back in second place. Wichita State (-2) finished third overall.
“We had too many big numbers, too many penalty shots, for us to compete for the team title,” Higgins added. “Things are improving. We've said it a lot, but if we can start eliminating some of our mistakes we feel like we can play with anybody.”
Freshamn Andrew Paysse (73-70-73=216, +3) was the next highest-ranking A&M golfer on the leaderboard as the Temple, Texas, product earned a share of 27th place.
A trio of Aggies were among a four-way tie for 46th as Cameron Champ (71-75-76=222), Ben Crancer (74-78-70=222) and Greg Yates (78-69-75=222) each wrapped up the event at nine-over par.
“It was good to see Ben play well, he gave us a solid round,” Higgins said. “Andrew was good again today and is really developing into a nice contributor for us.”
The Aggies' next action will also come in the Sunshine State as they take part in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Palm City, Fla., March 23-24.
