Garrett, Hubenak Lead Aggies Past Roadrunners
Nov 19, 2016 | Football
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- Jake Hubenak threw for 248 yards and a touchdown and Myles Garrett had 4 1/2 sacks to help No. 23 Texas A&M get back on track with a 23-10 win over UTSA on Saturday.
The Aggies (8-3) were in desperate need of a victory after consecutive losses to Mississippi State and Mississippi ruined their shot at the College Football Playoff.
The Roadrunners cut the lead to 3 points early in the second quarter after a one-handed touchdown grab by Josh Stewart. The Aggies then scored the next 13 points, capped by a 47 yard run by Trayveon Williams to make it 23-7 in the third quarter.
UTSA (5-6) was led by Jared Johnson, who threw for 186 yards and a touchdown.
Garrett was finally healthy after missing two games and being limited in several others because of a high ankle sprain. Garrett finished with eight tackles, broke up a pass and forced a fumble. Instead of limping as he has been in recent weeks, Garrett was harassing UTSA's two quarterbacks all game.
He further showed his ankle is fine when he batted down a pass in the second quarter and celebrated with a spirited dance. He had another big play in the fourth quarter when he sacked Johnson to force a fumble, which A&M recovered.
Garrett has 8 1/2 sacks this season to give him 32 1/2 for his career, making him the eighth player in Southeastern Conference history with at least 30 career sacks.
Josh Reynolds caught a 16-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and finished with 93 yards receiving. Williams had 11 carries for 80 yards to leave him 44 yards shy of becoming the first true freshman at the school to rush for 1,000 yards.
ABOUT THE VICTORY...
Texas A&M improved to 8-3 overall with a 23-10 victory over UTSA on Saturday at Kyle Field.
• The victory makes Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin and Alabama boss Nick Saban the only SEC head coaches with at least eight victories in each of the last five seasons (2012-16).
• With the win, Sumlin becomes the second head coach in school history to win at least eight games in the first five games of his career. Hall of Famer R.C. Slocum won at least eight games in his first seven seasons at Texas A&M from 1989-1995.
• Sumlin's five-season streak of eight-win seasons is the second-longest in school history.
• The win marked the first win for starting QB Jake Hubenak, the junior started the 2015 Music City Bowl and last week against Ole Miss.
• Texas A&M surpassed the 5,000-yard plateau in total yards for a school-record eighth straight season. Sumlin is the first Texas A&M coach to direct a 5,000-yard offense in five straight seasons.
REYNOLDS JOINS THE 2,500-YARD CLUB
Senior WR Josh Reynolds joined the Aggies' exclusive 2,500-yard Club for career receiving yards with 93 yards on seven catches against UTSA.
• Additionally, the San Antonio native hauled in his 27th career touchdown grab. Reynolds, the SEC active leader in receiving touchdowns, trails only Jeff Fuller (34) on the all-time A&M recieving TD list.
• Reynolds now ranks fourth all-time on A&M's career receiving yards list and is within striking distance of Terrence Murphy for 3rd all-time (2,600 yards, 2001-04)

Looking healthy for the first time in over a month, junior DE Myles Garrett tallied a career-high 4.5 QB sacks against UTSA and joined the SEC's exclusive 30 QB sack Club.
• Garrett's 4.5 QB sacks were a career-high and were just half-a-sack off the school record of five by Alex Morris against the Run-and-Shoot Houston Cougars in 1987.
• Garrett became the eighth SEC player and sixth Texas A&M player to reach 30 career QB sacks.
• The 4.5 sacks moved Garrett past Hall-of-Famer Reggie White, the Tennessee great tallied 32 QB take downs in Knoxville.
