No. 9 Texas A&M Defeats Wisconsin, 4-0

MADISON, Wisconsin – No. 9 Texas A&M returned to the win column with a 4-0 victory over Wisconsin today in the consolation draw of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Aggies improve to 4-2 after capturing the doubles point and then winning the first three singles matches to be completed, all in straight sets. The host Badgers fall to 2-2.
A&M won the doubles point as Rachel Pierson and Eva Paalma jumped out to a 4-1 lead and went on to finish off Lauren Chypyha and Kendall Kirsch, 6-3, at the No. 1 line. Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat clinched the point with a 6-2 victory over Sydney Rider and Ekaterina Stepanova at No. 2.
The No. 3 line, which featured A&M's Saska Gavrilovska and Domenica Gonzalez and Wisconsin's Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau was knotted at 5-5 when the point was clinched, and play was stopped.
Paalma, a sophomore who was playing No. 3 singles for the first time in her career, gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead and improved to 5-0 in dual matches this season with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kirsch. Paalma won five consecutive games to close out the straight-set win.
Freshman Domenica Gonzalez put A&M up, 3-0, reeling off six consecutive games to complete a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Maria Avgerinos at No. 4.
Mamalat, playing No. 6, then clinched the victory for the Aggies, winning two straight games against Sydney Rider to break away from a 4-4 tie in the second set to win the match, 6-3, 6-4.
Wisconsin had the edge in the remaining three matches, but play was suspended once the Aggies reached four points. In a match-up of ranked players, 66th-ranked Chypyha held a 6-4, 4-3 lead over No. 53 Gavrilovska at the No. 1 line. Stepanova held a 7-5, 5-2 advantage over 58th-ranked Pierson at No. 2, and Grambeau was up, 6-4, 5-3 over Ines Deheza at No. 5.
A&M concludes the tournament Sunday at 6:30 p.m. against No. 14 Duke. It marks the Aggies' third top-15 opponent in four matches.
