Pairings Set for Aggie Invite’s Opening Day
Apr 01, 2016 | Men's Golf
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Golf fans will get a chance to see some of the PGA's stars of tomorrow in Aggieland this weekend as the 10th-annual Aggie Invitational tees off Saturday morning at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.
"We're excited about the field we've got coming in this weekend," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We've played a pretty good schedule this spring, but it's always special at Traditions when we bring in quality opponents. Some future PGA players are here without a doubt."
Tee times and opening-day pairings have been set for the tournament with the first Aggies stepping to the tee box at 7:30 a.m. Admission is free for all spectators, who are asked to turn cell phones off and remain on the cart paths or in the rough, while staying at least 15 yards away from the golfers.
After 36 holes of competition on Saturday, the tournament concludes with a final 18 holes Sunday morning.
The 2016 Aggie Invitational field consists of 15 teams, seven of which are ranked in the top 50 according to the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Competing this weekend will be (24) Arkansas, (31) Baylor, Charlotte, Kent State, (17) LSU, Ohio State, (14) Oklahoma, (8) Oklahoma State, Michigan, New Mexico State, North Texas, (29) Texas A&M, (36) Texas Tech, UC Riverside & UTSA.
Texas A&M has been playing solid golf since resuming its 2015-16 season in early February following the winter break. Competing against some of collegiate golf's top squads, the Aggies have finished third place or better in four of their last five events, including a first-place showing at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale Ariz. March 5-6.
"This is a huge tournament for us," Higgins added. "We've been playing really well all spring so we'd like to keep that going and roll into the SEC Championship with some momentum."
The Aggies' lineup for the tournament consists of seniors Adrià Arnaus, Ben Crancer and Andrew Lister, sophomore Cameron Champ and freshman Chandler Phillips. In addition, A&M golfers Andrew Paysse, Connor Black and Jake Goodman will compete as individuals.
Crancer owns the Aggies' lone medalist honors this weekend, topping the 66-player field at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate at eight-under par to record his second collegiate victory. Champ, meanwhile, paces the Aggies with a 72.10 scoring average during 10 events played.
Another of A&M's young contributors, Phillips has been impressive during his rookie season and leads the Aggies with four top-10 placings this season. His success includes a runner-up showing during the Aggies' last action which came at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. After tying atop the leaderboard at two-under par, the Hunstville, Texas, native fell just short in his bid for medalist honors during a playoff hole.
"He (Chandler) has exceeded our expectations and has just been amazing," Higgins said. "He is so competitive and every time he feels he's even close to falling out of the lineup he works that much harder and his determination gets more amped up. He had a great finish at the Floridian last week, that was an outstanding field and to go down to the wire in the field with a chance to qualify for a PGA Tour event was outstanding."
