Men’s Golf Finishes as Runner Up at SEC Championship
Apr 17, 2016 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Securing its best finish since joining the league four years ago, the Texas A&M men's golf team completed a runner-up showing at the 2016 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championship on Sunday.
"It's hard to be disappointed because so many good things happened this week," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "The guys fought so hard and gave us everything they had. We came up a little bit short but I could not be more proud of the way our guys played and the determination they had to try and bring a championship home."
Competing for a third straight day on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club where they were faced with challenging windy conditions, the Aggies (287-283-286=856, +16) were neck and neck with eventual champion Georgia (+13) throughout Sunday's final round before finishing just three shots back of the Bulldogs.
"To come within three shots of a conference championship in these conditions really speaks volumes to this team and what they're capable of," Higgins added. "We can play with anybody in the country and we've shown that time and time again this spring."
Florida (+21), Arkansas (+21) and defending national champion LSU (+24) rounded out the top five on the 14-team leaderboard, which featured 10 squads ranked in the top 40 of the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.
A pair of Aggies made runs at individual medalist honors and finished with shares of fifth place in the final player standings as Andrew Lister (74-66-72=212, +2) and Chandler Phillips (68-73-71=212, +2) each ended play just seven shots back of the winner, Lee McCoy of Georgia (-3).
For Lister, the showing was his third career as well as second consecutive top-five finish following a fourth-place result at the Aggie Invitational earlier this month. Phillips, meanwhile, notched his team-leading third top-five placing of the season.
"I'm really proud of Andrew," Higgins said. "He's playing some great golf and now has two straight top-five finishes against outstanding fields. Chandler had another really great finish and to play this well as a freshman really says something."
Senior Ben Crancer (73-75-70=218, +8) made a final-round surge up the leaderboard, climbing 23 spots with an even par showing on Sunday that left the Kirkwood, Mo., native in a tie for 18th place overall.
Meanwhile, Adria Arnaus (75-69-78=222, +12) along with sophomore Cameron Champ (72-78-73=223, +13) rounded out the A&M lineup in 36th and 38th places, respectively.
"It really was a great team effort," Higgins said. "Top to bottom, everybody really pitched in to give us some good rounds against some really tough competition in difficult conditions."
The Aggies will learn their postseason destination when pairings and competition sites for the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship are revealed live on the morning of May 5 during Golf Channel's Morning Drive.
