Men’s Golf Set to Tee Off at NCAA Albuquerque Regional
May 15, 2016 | Men's Golf
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Following a Sunday practice round on the University of New Mexico Championship Course, the Texas A&M men's golf team is set to begin competition at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional on Monday morning.
The three-day tournament will consist of 54 holes of stroke play, with 18 holes each day beginning at 9 a.m. (CT) Monday. The top five teams in the regional advance to the NCAA Championship, scheduled for May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Additionally, the highest-placing individual who is not a member of an advancing team will also earn a trip to Oregon.
The Aggies will be playing in their 13th NCAA Tournament in the past 14 seasons as well as their 42nd overall showing in the NCAA field. The UNM Championship Course, which serves as the home of the Lobo golf teams, will play at 7,248-yard, par-72 for the event.
"We're excited," Aggie head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We missed regionals last year so it feels like forever and we're looking forward to being back in the NCAA Tournament. Both Coach (Brian) Kortan and I have a lot of experience at New Mexico, having both coached there, so it's a chance for the two of us to kind of go home and play at a place we're very familiar with."
Representing the Aggies at the event will be seniors Adrià Arnaus, Ben Crancer and Andrew Lister as well as sophomore Cameron Champ and freshman Chandler Phillips.
Southern California is the top seed among the 14-team regional field in Albuquerque, followed by Arizona State, USF, San Diego State, Texas A&M, North Carolina State, New Mexico, Texas Tech, TCU, Iowa, Liberty, Army, Cleveland State and Wagner College.
"We're the five seed, but that really doesn't matter much once we start," Higgins added. "You've got the host school (New Mexico) as a seven seed and they are great on their home golf course, plus some of the other teams that are more familiar with the course and have played here a lot are some of the lower seeds. I think it's going to be a really competitive field, top to bottom."
Texas A&M will be paired alongside golfers from North Carolina State and San Diego State for the opening round and begin teeing off at hole No. 10 at 9:20 a.m. (CT). Live results can be found on Golfstat.com.
