Texas A&M women's basketball announced the signing of junior college All-American Caylinne Martin (McLennan CC) to a National Letter of Intent on Friday. Martin is to enroll at Texas A&M in time to be eligible to compete as a junior in the 2016-17 season.
"Caylinne has explosive athleticism, strength and a face-up game that will allow us to compete at the post position in the SEC," said Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair. "She is a quiet kid who lets her game do the talking."
"We have followed Caylinne since her days at Langham Creek, and she has continued to improve while at McLennan," added Blair. "We have had success with junior college players both on and off the court, which made adding the experience and skill of Caylinne a no-brainer for both our young team and for Caylinne."
A 6-3 forward, Martin averaged 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds as a sophomore in 2015-16, and was named an All-American by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. She reached double figures in scoring in 19 of 24 games, including a career-high of 24 on Jan. 9 against Ranger College. For her efforts, she was named to the All-North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference team.
As a freshman in 2014-15, Martin averaged 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds, and was named NTJCAC Freshman of the Year.
She is the No. 6 prospect at her position and the No. 21 junior college prospect overall according to the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.
Dan Olson of the College Girls Basketball Report called her a "power-body low block insider who a brings a mid-post face up game, [a player who is] active on glass [and] pins, seals, catches and finishes in traffic."
Martin averaged 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks as a prep player at Langham Creek High School, where she earned First Team All-District honors twice for head coach Annette Stewart. She holds the Lobos' single-game school record for points (35), rebounds (25) and blocks (11).
She played AAU basketball for Triple D Hoops, where she was coached by Monica Roberts, who played for Texas A&M associate head coach Kelly Bond-White at Providence College.
Martin is the second junior college All-American to join the Aggies in the past week, as Midland's Walnatia Wright signed a Letter of Intent on Tuesday. Wright was an All-America pick by the NJCAA Division I Committee.
The Aggies welcome six newcomers in 2016-17, four of which are true freshmen. In addition to Martin and Wright, the Aggies bring in Aahliyah Jackson (Ft. Smith, Ark./Northside), ArLeighshya McElroy (Richardson, Texas/Richardson), Rakell Spencer (New Orleans, La./Cabrini) and Jasmine Williams (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Woods).
A total of 10 junior college players, including Martin and Wright, have joined Aggies since Gary Blair was named head coach in 2003, a group that includes standouts such as 2011 Final Four MOP Danielle Adams, Achiri Ade, and first team all-conference selection Tanisha Smith.
