No. 16 Texas A&M blanked by Texas, 5-0
May 20, 2016 | Softball
LAFAYETTE, La. – The No. 16 Texas A&M softball team was defeated by Texas, 5-0, Friday in the first game of the NCAA Lafayette Regional at Lamson Park.
"This is obviously a very disappointing loss for us," head coach Jo Evans said. "I never expected us to come out and get shutout, especially with an offense as potent as the one we have. I thought Trinity (Harrington) pitched well. If you told me we would've given up two walks and seven hits on the day, I would've said we had a great shot to win that ballgame. Texas did a great job of squaring the ball up. Obviously, it is a disappointing way to start the tournament."
Texas' Lindsey Stephens led off the game with a solo home run to left, before hitting another solo home run in the third to give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead.
Texas (38-14) doubled its advantage in the sixth on a pair of home runs from Mickenzi Krpec and Reagan Hathaway. Kelli Hanzel homered to left in the seventh for Texas' fifth solo home run of the day.
Texas A&M (37-19) threatened in the first inning as freshman Kaitlyn Alderink got on base via a walk and moved to second on a sophomore Ashley Walters two-out single. Texas pitcher Tiarra Davis was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout.
Sophomore Trinity Harrington suffered the loss, throwing 5.2 innings giving up six hits, four runs with two strikeouts. Freshman Samantha Show closed out the game, throwing 1.1 innings of relief with a strikeout.
The Aggies will return to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Boston University. The game can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com. TV coverage of Saturday's contest can be seen on Watch ESPN.
Texas A&M holds a 6-0 series advantage over the Terriers, including a 9-1 victory on March 4 at the San Diego Classic.
