No. 16 Texas A&M falls to No. 9 UL-Lafayette in extra-inning battle
May 22, 2016 | Softball
"First of all, you have to congratulate the Ragin' Cajuns," head coach Jo Evans said. "They gave us a big fight out there, which we knew they would. I thought it was a great regional. As far as our team goes, I just can't say enough about our ball club and how hard we fought. I thought we played with a lot of courage, confidence and resiliency. We never got down or felt bad about ourselves. We never really worried about the outcome. We expected to win. We came here expecting to play ULL in the championship game on Sunday and any team worth their salt expects to win. It is a disappointing loss for us and a disappointing way to end our season."
The Ragin' Cajuns (46-7) took an early 1-0 lead in the first on a Lexie Elkins home run to right field.
Freshman Keeli Milligan led off the bottom half of the first with an infield single before recording her 54th stolen base of the season. Sophomore Ashley Walters drove in Milligan with a double to centerfield for her 58th RBI of the season.
In the second inning, senior Cali Lanphear led off the inning with a double down the right-field line and scored on a freshman Riley Sartain single to center.
Louisiana-Lafayette scored four runs in the third on a RBI single from DJ Sanders and a three-run homer from Sara Corbello to take a 5-2 lead. Kelsey Vincent extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth.
The Aggies responded with four runs, all with two outs, as freshman Kaitlyn Alderink hit her fifth home run of the season, scoring sophomore Erica Russell. After sophomore Tori Vidales reached on an error and moved to third on a Walters double, sophomore Kristen Cuyos tied the game with a two-RBI single to left.
Cuyos finishes the season with 61 RBI, the most by an Aggie in a single season since Meagan May drove in 62 in 2010, and third all-time in program history.
Texas A&M took the lead in the fifth as freshman Samantha Show led off the frame with a solo home run to right-centerfield, her 13th of the season. With two outs, Milligan doubled and scored on an Alderink single to right.
ULL's DJ Sanders tied the game in the seventh with a two-run homer to center, before Aleah Craighton hit the go-ahead home run in the ninth.
Show suffered the loss, throwing 8.0 innings, giving up nine runs with two strikeouts. Show finishes the season with 25 wins, the most by an Aggie since 2013 (Mel Dumezich).
