Junior Kavan Eubank Wins Turning Stone – Tiger Intercollegiate
Sep 05, 2016 | Men's Golf
VERONA, N.Y. – During his first tournament as an Aggie, junior Kavan Eubank took home individual medalist honors while helping the Texas A&M men's golf team post a second-place showing at the season-opening Turning Stone – Tiger Intercollegiate.
Texas A&M (279-287-293=859, -5) opened the day atop the team leaderboard but fell behind tournament host and eventual champion Missouri (283-290-279=852, -12) during Monday's final round.
"It's disappointing," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "I thought we were going to win this one, but we let it slip away. We had two guys finish in the top two and three in the top 10, that's usually enough to get it done. Every man counts so when you have to count a 79 in the final round, you're going to have a hard time winning."
The Tigers enjoyed the day's best round at an impressive nine-under par during the concluding 18 holes to best the Aggies, who fired a team score of five-over.
"Tip of the hat to Missouri," Higgins added. "They played fantastic today. Really smart, really disciplined and we were not."
For Eubank (65-73-70=208, -8), who was playing in his first Texas A&M event after transferring from California Baptist, Monday's 70 was his second round under par at the tournament after opening with a first-round best 65. The Corpus Christi, Texas, native carded six birdies on the day to give him a total of 17 for the three-round event.
Aggie sophomore Chandler Phillips (66-72-71=209, -7) battled Euanks for the pole position on the leaderboard throughout the tournament, finishing second to give the Huntsville, Texas, product his fourth career top-five finish.
"We would have really liked to come out with the trophy today, but on the positive side we had two guys battling it out for the individual championship," Higgins said. "Kavan and Chandler played fantastic all weekend. We are going to learn from this and move on. Looking forward to the season, we have a lot of things to work on. We know where we can make some improvements and we are not that far away."
Junior Cameron Champ (74-69-73=216, E) carded his fifth career top-10 showing, ending play in a tie for ninth at even par. Rounding out the Texas A&M lineup were freshman Viraj Madappa (74-78-80=232, +16) and junior Andrew Paysse (82-73-79=234, +18), who finished in 45th and 51st places, respectively.
Up next for Aggie golf is a trip to Olympia Fields, Ill., for the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational which will take place Sept. 16-18.
