Arkansas Rallies to Top A&M, 62-60
Jan 17, 2017 | Men's Basketball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- Daryl Macon scored 16 points and Moses Kingsley followed with 12 as Arkansas overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half to defeat Texas A&M 62-60 on Tuesday night.
Arkansas (14-4, 3-3 Southeastern) led 61-60 with 26 seconds remaining when the Razorbacks' Jaylen Barford missed two free throws. On the second, A&M's D.J. Hogg and Robert Williams became entangled in fighting for the rebound under the basket, and the ball rolled out of bounds on the Aggies.
Following the inbound pass Macon dribbled the ball out of bounds in trying to escape a trap, and the Aggies (9-8, 1-5) had another chance. But Hogg's long-range, off-balanced offering missed its mark by a long shot with seven seconds left, and Macon was fouled on the other end of the floor by Tyler Davis.
Macon made his first free throw and missed his second, and a runner from a few feet above the top of the key by A&M's Admon Gilder bounced off the rim as time expired.
Gilder led the Aggies with 16 points, and Tyler Davis followed with 14.

TEXAS A&M HEAD COACH BILLY KENNEDY
Opening Statement…
"Another missed opportunity of finishing games off and making plays when we have to. I thought Arkansas got some second chance points when the game was on the line and they hurt us on the glass. We were not very disciplined. Tyler Davis should be getting more than five shots. I'm sure Arkansas' pressure had something to do with it. We played like an immature undisciplined team and that's on me. We need to do a better job of getting them tougher and tighter with the ball."
On the Arkansas press…
"I thought we settled for jump shots. Tonny (Trocha-Morelos) had a three in the corner that was really quick. We had to get the ball inside, that's where we had an advantage. I've got to go back and see. We had some open shots, good open looks that we missed."
On if DJ Hogg's last shot attempt was what they wanted…
"The ball was supposed to go straight to Tyler [Davis]. He was open. Admon [Gilder] knew that that's where we wanted him to throw the ball. I don't know if he just didn't feel like he could get him the ball, we thought he was open, and then we wanted to drop the basketball. We've been working with our perimeter guys on two foot jump stops, driving the ball and using their size to get fouled. But that's not where we lost the game. We lost the game in the stretch where we were up 8-10 and they got some second chance points and you've got to give them credit. The [Manuale] Watkins kid, he's not a three point shooter, he makes three threes and then, Tyler leaves Kingsley wide open who has I think made two threes, so you've got to give them credit. They made some big shots when they had to."
On turnovers and free throws…
"Well, when you have eight turnovers in the second half and those led to transition points. I don't know how many second chance transition points off of turnovers they had in the first half. It wasn't very many if any but we got outrebounded. I thought that hurt us and then when DJ Hogg goes 2 for 12, he's such a good scorer for us and a guy who's got to score for us, for us to have a chance to win. We just don't have that much firepower."
SOPHOMORE CENTER TYLER DAVIS
On if this loss is toughest to take this year…
"It feels like it just because I know my guys are putting in so much time and effort. Coach Kennedy is doing everything he can possible to get us right. All of our coaches are, so it hurts a lot. Each loss hurts but this one because you know, like I said my guys are just working so hard. We're doing everything we can."
On what led to Arkansas' comeback in second half…
"Just a lot of small plays, man. Just a lot of small plays, you know calls, stuff that we did at the end. It's undisciplined."
On if final shot was what Aggies' wanted…
"I mean I trust Admon [Gilder] with the ball in transition, any time of the day so I'll take him with the ball. I'll take DJ [Hogg] with the ball. I'll take any of my teammates with the ball."
On Manuale Watkins…
"We know he's not going to shoot a lot of threes but we also know that he brings a lot of energy to this team and he's a difference-maker, just like he was the last time we played them at their house last year. He was the difference-maker, he was the energy-bringer so on a scouting point, it was not to let him come in and have an impact on the game and he did. He does his job every night."
On reason the Aggies were unable to get a field goal in last six minutes…
"I don't know, it's something we're working on. Like I said, we're just a little undisciplined at the wrong times and it showed and it hurts us but this game, it felt a lot better. I felt like we took care of the ball more but we've still got work to do. We're going to keep working. The season's still got games left so we've got work to do."
Arkansas Head Coach Mike Anderson
Opening Statement…
"Number one it was a hard fought game. We were very fortunate to come out with the win. We had a lot of mishaps coming down the stretch. We know that wins on the road are few and far between and You've got to get to the free throw line and take care of the ball. The difference in this game was our defense. I thought our defense was good especially in he second half. Our guys kept fighting and clawing and found ways to make plays. The depth of our team was big tonight. Moses was really strong going down the stretch. Our role guys were heroes tonight. Watkins had made one threes all year and hit three tonight, we sort of took the mask off. We were fortunate tonight."
Second half runs…
"We settled down and got some better ball movement tonight then we executed. We started putting A&M on their heels. I thought we were in attack mode and made some shots. Our pressure defense sped them up at times. I thought we spread the floor and hit the big shots and made plays. On the road you have to make big plays. But the thing that kept us around was our defense."
Getting the win in College Station…
"It's a road game and that means we are behind the eight ball. It was the next game on our schedule and we can't get caught up in that. The guys came out and played well. The guys are the ones responsible for the win and I try to stay out of their way during the games. We are in race and we are trying to catch up with the guys in front of us."
