Texas A&M men break two school records in win at Art Adamson Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men's swimming and diving team broke two school records and won five races Saturday to win the Art Adamson Invitational at the Student Recreation Natatorium.
The Aggies won the meet with a score of 1338, followed by Utah (898), LSU (569.5), Air Force (423) and Hawaii (417).

"The invitational is important to the things we do in preparation for the SEC Championships. The format here is pretty close to what the SEC and NCAA meets are like. For us and step up and win this and the way we won this, we did really well."

- Texas A&M tallied victories in the 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay.
- Senior Brock Bonetti broke his school record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:40.56. Bonetti held the previous mark of 1:41.77, set at last year's SEC Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
- Angel Martinez shattered his own school record in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:42.08. Martinez bettered his previous mark of 1:43.25.

Race Recaps:
- 1650-yard freestyle: Jake Gibbons claimed the victory with a time of 15:18.95, nearly nine seconds ahead of second place. Gibbons' mark is good for a NCAA "B" cut.
- 200-yard backstroke: Bonetti began the finals with a dominant win, setting the school record with a NCAA "B" cut time of 1:40.56. Anthony Kim placed third at 1:43.62, also a NCAA "B" cut mark.
- 100-yard freestyle: Adam Koster led Texas A&M with a third place finish, recording a NCAA "B" cut time of 43.73.
- 200-yard breaststroke: Mauro Castillo, Jonathan Tybur, Tanner Olson and Austin Van Overdam took the top four spots with NCAA "B" cut times of 1:54.14, 1:55.63, 1:55.65 and 1:56.60, respectively. Benajmin Walker also notched a "B" cut time of 1:58.97.
- 200-yard butterfly: Martinez and Bonetti torched the A-final, finishing first and second with NCAA "B" cut times of 1:42.08 and 1:42.17, respectively. Both times bettered the previous school record of 1:43.25, held by Martinez. Also achieving a NCAA "B" cuts was Van Overdam at 1:47.33.
- 400-yard freestyle relay: The Aggies closed the meet with a victory as Adam Koster, Mike Thibert, Connor Long and Martinez finished at 2:53.87.
