Aggie Golfers Take Aim at Louisiana Classics
Feb 26, 2017 | Men's Golf
LAFAYETTE, La. – The 13th-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team tees off at the 32nd annual Louisiana Classics on Monday from Oakbourne Country Club.
The first two rounds are set for shotgun start Monday with the opening turn on the 6,898 yard, par-72 course teeing off an 8:00 a.m. The Classics wrap up Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
"It's always good to come over to Lafayette for The Louisiana Classics," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We are coming off a really good showing and I know the boys are fired up to keep it going. Oakbourne is a good track and it's a strong field so I'm excited to see what we can do."
Sophomore Chandler Phillips, riding the confidence of an individual championship during A&M's most recent outing at the Burns Intercollegiate in Hawai'i, highlights the five-man Aggie lineup. Juniors Kavan Eubank and Cameron Champ, the other two Aggies to capture titles during the season, also make the trek to Louisiana. Rounding out the A&M lineup is freshman Dan Erickson along with senior Jake Goodman, who will appear in the A&M lineup for the first time this season. Additionally, freshman Josh Gliege will compete as an individual.
The 15-team field at the tournament includes four top-25 squads, including the No. 3 team in the country, Illinois. Joining the Illini and Aggies are host Louisiana, along with Kent State, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Illinois, Southern Mississippi, Texas State, Texas-Arlington, Toledo, UMKC and UTSA.
This is Texas A&M's 20th trip to the Louisiana Classics with the Aggies in search of their first victory at the event after posting runner-up showings on four occasions. In last year's event, Texas A&M wound up in third behind Illinois and Kansas. Three Aggies finished in the top seven as Champ led the pack with a fourth-place finish, climbing 10 spots on the event's final day.
