Aggies Open Play at Bandon Dunes
Mar 12, 2017 | Men's Golf
BANDON, Ore. – The Texas A&M men's golf team opened play at the Bandon Dunes Championship Sunday at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, holding a tie for fifth place after the event's opening 18 holes.
"Today was an up and down day, a little like a roller coaster ride," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We didn't play great. We hit some fantastic shots and made a few eagles to look good on some of the par-5s, but on the holes where we just needed to hit good shots we got a little lackadaisical and let a lot of shots slip away. We missed greens with wedges, had some three-putts and things like that which prevented us from having a really good round."
The Aggies (286, -2) share fifth on the 16-team leaderboard alongside Georgia State and Oregon State, while Oregon (-13), Colorado (-5), Texas Tech (-5) and Auburn (-4) own the top four spots.
Individually, a pair of Aggies hold spots in the top 10 of the player standings with juniors Cameron Champ (68, -4) and Kavan Eubanks (69, -3) claiming shares of fourth and sixth place, respectively, following the first round of competition on the par-72 Old MacDonald Course.
Sophomore Chandler Phillips (72, E) ended the day tied for 29th, while Max Miller (77, +5) and Dan Erickson (79, +7) rounded out the A&M contingency.
"I'm really proud of Cam and Kavan, they both had really solid rounds." Higgins added. "Chandler got off to a really rough start but battled back to reach even par."
The tournament resumes Monday morning with Texas A&M's golfers beginning to tee off at 10:30 a.m. (CT) paired alongside competitors from Denver, Georgia State and Oregon State. Live scoring and results can be found on BirdieFire.com as well as live updates via twitter at @AggieMensGolf.
