Aggies Finish Sixth at Valspar Collegiate
Mar 21, 2017 | Men's Golf
PALM CITY, Fla. – The Texas A&M men's golf team wrapped up play at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday, finishing the event in sixth place.
Competing for a third straight day at Floridian National Golf Club, the Aggies (288-295-284=867, +15) were even par as a team to finish the 54-hole event at 15-over and eight shots back of team champion Wake Forest (+7). The top seven teams on the leaderboard were separated by just 12 strokes in the final standings of the highly-competitive event.
"We really didn't play very well today and still shot even par as a team, so in reality we're pretty encouraged but we're not happy with the finish," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "I feel like we're better than that. This was probably our worst showing of the year and to only finish eight shots away from winning shows that we've got a team capable of doing some big things."
Junior Andrew Paysse (70-74-71=215, +2) notched his highest finish of the season, carding an even par round of 71 on Tuesday to finish tied for 12th place. Classmate Cameron Champ (76-71-70=217, +4), meanwhile, continued to climb the leaderboard after struggling on the tournament's opening day, ascending eight spots into 18th place to record his sixth top-20 showing in eight events this season.
"Andrew had a great showing," Higgins commented. "Finishing top-20 in that field is really nice and hopefully the start of good things to come for him. He's been working extremely hard and it's nice to see him have some great results."
Sophomore Chandler Phillips (70-79-72=221, +8) ended play in a tie for 35th while rookie Dan Erickson (72-75-75=222, +9) was a stroke back in 40th. Junior Kavan Eubank (82-75-71=228, +15) rounded out the A&M lineup in 60th place while sophomore Max Miller (78-77-76=231, +18), who competed as an individual, earned a share of 68th.
"We've got to clean some things up because we were pretty sloppy the past couple days," Higgins added. "We're going to get home and back to work on the basics to get ready for the Aggie Invitational."
Up next on the schedule for Texas A&M men's golf is the team's lone home event of the season, the Aggie Invitational which will take place April 1-2 at Traditions Golf Club.
