Pairings Set for Aggie Invite’s Opening Day
Mar 31, 2017 | Men's Golf
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Golf fans will get a chance to see some of the PGA's stars of tomorrow in Aggieland this weekend as the 11th-annual Aggie Invitational tees off Saturday morning at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.
"The field is absolutely amazing," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "Everyone here is really strong; a lot of great players and a lot of great teams. They all love coming here and playing on this golf course. It's good preparation and I think that's why we get such a good field. Traditions holds up well every year and you have to play really good golf. The coaches feel like it gets their players ready physically for what they are going to see in the postseason."
Tee times and opening-day pairings have been set for the tournament with the first Aggies stepping to the tee box at 7:30 a.m. Admission is free for all spectators, who are asked to turn cell phones off and remain on the cart paths or in the rough, while staying at least 15 yards away from the golfers.
After 36 holes of competition on Saturday, the tournament concludes with a final 18 holes Sunday morning.
The 2017 Aggie Invitational field consists of 13 teams, seven of which are ranked in the top 20 according to the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin rankings (3/27) including three of the top five teams in the nation (No. 2 Baylor, No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 5 LSU). In addition to the top-ranked teams, the individual field includes 13 players who are ranked among the top 50 golfers in the country (Golfweek/Sagarin).
Texas A&M has been playing solid golf all season long, finishing in the top five of the team standings in eight of nine events while notching five top three showings. However, the Aggies will be without a pair of golfers this weekend as junior Kavan Eubank and freshman Dan Erickson are unavailable for the tournament.
"We have two guys out who've played every tournament with us this spring, Kavan and Dan," Higgins added. "They were involved in a pretty serious car accident a few days ago. They are both going to be okay but they won't be able to play this week. The most important thing is that they are healthy, happy and alright."
The Aggies' lineup for the tournament consists of juniors Cameron Champ and Andrew Paysse, sophomores Chandler Phillips and Brandon Smith, as well as freshman Josh Gliege.
In addition, A&M golfers Jake Goodman, Max Miller, Dylan Siebenaler and Mickey Werenski will compete as individuals.
Phillips has been impressive during his second season in Aggieland, notching seven top-10 showings with individual wins at the Golfweek Conference Challenge during the fall semester and the John Burns Intercollegiate in mid-February. The Huntsville, Texas, native leads the squad with a 70.44 scoring average this season and was recently chosen to represent the United States at the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup, which will be June 9-11 at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Representing the other half of the Aggies' impressive one-two punch at the top of their lineup is junior Cameron Champ, who maintains a 72.04 stroke average on the season with four top-10 showings and a win at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational in September.
