Mar 24, 2017 | Track and Field
SAN ANTONIO – Alison Ondrusek threw a career best mark to win the hammer throw at the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational on Friday afternoon. The distance of 197 feet, 9 inches (60.29) won the competition as Ondrusek improved her No. 3 position on the Aggie all-time list.
"It was nice to break through and get past 60 meters," noted Ondrusek, who also broke the meet record. "It's something I've really been trying to do this year. Having a second PR in the second meet of the outdoor season, I can't be more pleased with how I'm doing.
"I'm doing four turns this year, so it has really helped with my rhythm. I'm trying to accelerate the ball and push it out there. It's been really good for me this season."
Ondrusek's victory was one of four throwing titles for the Texas A&M on Friday. Through the first day of the meet the Aggie men scored 28 points while the women totaled 47 in three events.
Action continues on Saturday with the pole vault beginning at 11 a.m. while running events start at 2 p.m. Results will be available online through the website http://www.sidearmstats.com/utsa/track/.
Texas A&M finished first and second in the women's hammer, as Carissa van Beek placed second with a throw of 180-9 (55.10), to produce 18 team points in the scored meet. In third place was UTSA's Shalise Borden with a 177-4 (54.05). Aggie Celine Markert placed 11th with a toss of 146-11 (44.78).
The two marks ahead of Ondrusek on the Aggie all-time list are the school record of 201-4 (61.28) set by Brea Garrett in 2014 and the 200-0 (60.96) throw by Meshell Trotter from 2000 that stood as the school record for 14 years.
Ondrusek now has produced four marks among the all-time top 10 performances at Texas A&M, currently at positions 3, 4, 6, and 8.
"I'd love to get the school record," stated Ondrusek. "That's what I'm going for. Get a school record, make nationals and support Texas A&M in Oregon."
A meet record also fell in the men's hammer as Austin Cook won the event with a throw of 199-6 (60.80), as he registered only two marks among his six attempts. Runner-up at 189-5 (57.74) was Victor Perez of UTSA, who passed his final three attempts.
Shelby Poncik threw a meet record of 161-10 (49.33) to win the women's javelin with Madalaine Stulce runner-up at 159-0 (48.47). A third Aggie thrower in the event, Christine Brigman, placed fifth with a toss of 126-8 (38.60). Texas A&M accumulated 22 points in the event.
William Petersson claimed the men's javelin with a winning toss of 212-8 (64.83), which bettered the meet record. Akron's Rodrigo Iglesias threw 207-1 as runner-up. Aggie Nathan Hite, preparing the decathlon at Texas Relays, placed sixth with a mark of 169-8 (51.71).
Jeff Bartlett placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 56-0 ½ (17.31) as UTSA swept the top three places for 24 points with Tyler Finke winning the event at 57-7 ¾ (17.44).
Celine Markert finished fourth in the women's shot put as she neared her career best with a toss of 47-2 ½ (14.39), which was just shy of her PR of 47-3 ½ (14.41). Serena Brown placed seventh at 45-1 (13.74), producing her best effort outdoors in the event. Baylor's Cion Hicks claimed the victory with a put of 55-5 ¾ (16.91).
