Return trip to Arizona has Texas A&M racing Aggie alums in Sun Angel Classic
Apr 07, 2017 | Track and Field
TEMPE – Texas A&M returns to Arizona State for the Sun Angel Classic this weekend after opening the outdoor season at the same venue three weeks ago.
"It's hard to take chances with the weather in our sport," said Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry. "I don't like to do that, I'd rather go to places where it stays warm. I prefer to be somewhere where we have the opportunity for good weather.
"The worst you'll likely get in the Phoenix area at this time of the year is some wind, but it likely won't be cold. For our sport that's a big thing."
The Aggies, coming off another successful weekend at the Texas Relays, will be part of an 18-team meet that includes host Arizona State along with Arkansas State, Boise State, Bucknell, BYU, Central Florida, College of the Sequioas, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Mt. SAC, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Oregon State, and Texas Tech.
Coverage of the meet will be available on flotrack.org through its subscription service. Results will be available at http://finishedresults.trackscoreboard.com/#/results/meet/1276.
Action in the Sun Angel Classic starts at noon on Friday for Texas A&M with Austin Cook in the men's hammer along with Alison Ondrusek and Carissa van Beek in the women's hammer.
Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. (PT) with field events and 2 p.m. with running events. Premiere field events begin at 1:30 p.m. while running events start at 6 p.m. and the meet is scheduled to conclude at 9:30 p.m.
A majority of the premiere events will have professional athletes mixed in with the collegians and there will be a handful of Aggies among the pro entries.
In the men's 400m, Mylik Kerley and Richard Rose compete against Aggie alum Bralon Taplin, who clocked 44.41 to win this meet a year ago and finished seventh in the Olympic final. Briyahna Desrosiers and Jaevein Reed will contest the women's 400m, which includes Olympic finalist Phyllis Francis and Aggie alum Kamaria Brown.
Three-time NCAA champion Shamier Little competes in the 400m hurdles for the first time this season, a week after splitting 49.89 as the anchor leg of the Track Station 4x400 at the Texas Relays. Aggie Lauren Lawless races in a separate section of the 400m hurdles. Last week she established a career best of 59.69 from lane one during the Texas Relays.
Opening with a 50.07 victory in the 400m hurdles on his last visit to Arizona State, Bobby Grant clocked 49.94 for third place at the Texas Relays. This week he races against Michael Stigler, the 2016 NCAA champion from Kansas, along with Texas A&M teammate Ilolo Izu.
Alex Riba and Cameron Villarreal will race at the mile distance in a field of 15, which includes Olympic gold medalist Matt Centrowitz. In the 800m, Devin Dixon is part of a nine-person field that includes Donavan Brazier, the 2015 NCAA champion and collegiate record holder.
Jazmine Fray and Katie Willard team up in the women's 800m, competing against Chanelle Price and Olicia Williams, while Arin Rice races in the 1,500m.
Former NCAA 200m champion Ameer Webb headlines the men's 100m with Aggie Seth Page racing in a separate heat. Elijah Morrow will square off against Aggie alum Shavez Hart in the 200m. Danyel White races in the women's 100m along with Jasmin Todd, formerly of Oregon, and Jamaica's Schillonie Calvert-Powell.
Audrey Malone, who opened with a pair of 181-8 throws in the javelin on the previous trip to Arizona State, leads a crew of three Aggies among a field of 26 throwers. Joining Malone are Shelby Poncik and Maddy Stulce. Serena Brown, winner of the Texas Relays B section discus, throws in the premiere discus with teammate Celine Markert.
The pole vault will include a trio of Aggies in the women's field with Emily Gunderson, Sara Kathryn Stevens and Augusta Thomason. The men's field also has three Texas A&M vaulters with Audie Wyatt, Carl Johansson and Jacob Wooten.
After clearing a personal best of 7-1 ¾ in the high jump, Garrett Cragin faces Texas Tech's Trey Culver, a two-time NCAA Indoor champion.
