May 25, 2017 | Men's Golf
SUGAR GROVE, Illinois — Representing the Texas A&M men's golf team as an individual, sophomore Chandler Phillips will tee off at 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship on Friday at Rich Harvest Farms.
Phillips is slated get his opening round underway at 2:17 p.m. (CT) Friday and will be paired alongside North Florida's Travis Trace and Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris.
The Aggies narrowly missed out on advancing to the NCAA Championship as a team, finishing in sixth place at the NCAA Sammamish Regional. Phillips, meanwhile, punched his ticket to the NCAA Championship by standing out as the regional's top individual on a non-advancing team, finishing seventh in the player standings.
"I'm excited for Chandler," Texas A&M head coach Higgins said after Phillips' showing at the regional. "He's had such a fantastic year, one of the best seasons in program history. We've had a couple guys who have won more during a season but he's put up consistently strong finishes week after week after week. He was a stud, shooting a 67 on the final round of regionals and earning a spot at the national championship."
A native of Huntsville, Texas, Phillips has posted a pair of individual titles this season, winning the Golfweek Conference Challenge and the John Burns Intercollegiate. The sophomore remains in contention to break the single-season Aggie scoring record with a 70.73 stroke per round pace. The record is currently held by Jordan Russell, who maintain a 70.60 stroke average during the 2010-11 campaign.
Phillips has posted a team-high nine top-10 showings and has carded par or better in a school-record 29 rounds to garner first-team All-SEC honors this season as well as be named a semifinalist for the Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award.
Rich Harvest Farms will play at par 72 and 7,300 yards for the NCAA Championship. The format for the championship will feature an initial 54 holes of stroke play with 18 holes per day throughout the weekend. Following Sunday's third round, the field will be culled to 15 teams as well as the top nine individuals on non-advancing teams which will move on to a concluding round of stroke play that will determined the 2017 individual champion and the eight teams that move on to the match play portion of the event.
