COLLEGE STATION – The No. 1 Texas A&M Equestrian team claimed its conference opener against No. 7 South Carolina, 12-8, Friday at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
"We got another stellar performance from the Hunt Seat side against a very good Hunt Seat team," head coach Tana McKay said. "Across the board we had some really good rides. I am very proud of how the girls came out and put their game faces on and did what they needed to do against a top opponent."
The Aggies (3-0, 1-0 SEC) took an early 3-2 lead after Equitation over Fences. Junior Rebekah Chenelle was named MOP after earning the first point of the meet with an 88-65 victory over Lizzie van der Walde. Senior Kai DeVoglaer edged out Madison Sellman, 86-85, followed by senior Alex Desiderio bettering Tyler Petrie, 82-76, to close the event.
South Carolina (0-1, 0-1 SEC) won Horsemanship, 3-2, to tie the meet, 5-5, at the halfway point. Junior Sarah Orsak outscored Quinn Brandt, 76-71, before senior Avery Ellis earned a 76.5 to top Paige Stopperich's 76.
The Maroon & White quickly regained the lead, defeating the Gamecocks, 4-1, in Equitation on the Flat. Hake led off with a 92-90 win over Chloe Schmidt, before Desiderio dropped Fabiano, 88-69. Chenelle followed suit downing Raleigh Bacharach, 93-82, to earn her second MOP honor of the day. Concluding the event, senior Maddie Swem defeated Sellman, 88-65.
