SCOTTSDALE, Arizona-- Dave Goff, a four-year starting guard for Coach Shelby Metcalf and the Texas Aggie basketball team from 1977-80, passed away today after battling cancer, his family announced.
Goff was the point guard on the 1980 Aggie squad that defeated Bradley in the opening round of the NCAA Championships and followed with a double overtime victory against North Carolina, 78-61, to reach the Sweet 16. The Aggies forced eventual national champion Louisville into overtime before dropping a 66-55 decision in the third round.
Goff was born Aug. 10, 1958, in Chicago, Ill. In addition to being All-Conference and All-State at Flossmoor High School, Goff was voted most likely to succeed and was part of the Illinois State Championship doubles team in tennis.
As a freshman in Aggieland, Goff started 27 of 28 games and established a new school record with 129 assists. As a sophomore, Goff started 26 of 27 games and had a career-high 20 points against Rice. His junior season he started 30 of 33 games and broke his own school record with 147 assists helping the team finish 24-9 and reached the third round of the NIT Championship.
As a senior, Goff was a co-captain along with backcourt mate David Britton as the Aggies finished the 1979-80 season with a 26-8 record and won the Southwest Conference title, as well as the SWC Tournament. That squad was dubbed "The Wall", for the front court of Vernon Smith, Rynn Wright and Rudy Woods.
In the NCAA Championship opening round game in Denton, Texas, Goff calmly sank two free throws with one-second remaining to give the Aggies a 55-53 victory over Bradley.
Goff would end his Aggie career with 535 assists which was a school-record at the time and is still fifth-best in school annals. He was the first four-year starter in Aggie basketball history and served the 1980-81 season as a graduate assistant on Coach Metcalf's coaching staff.
Arrangements are pending.
