As a freshman, Shewmake filled up his trophy case. In addition to earning the Aggies' first SEC Freshman of the Year honor, he was named All-America First Team by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and All-America Second Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association and D1Baseball.com. Collegiate Baseball named him National Freshman of the Year and the NCBWA christened Shewmake the District VII Player of the Year.

Shewmake logged a .529 slugging percentage. His 34 RBI in SEC play ranked third in the league. He hit .307 with 15 runs, five doubles and seven home runs in conference action.
Four of the 16 semifinalists hail from the SEC, the most for any conference.
The award, sponsored by Mizuno, honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented this summer by the College Baseball Foundation. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders to from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
The award has been given annually since 2004. Until 2008 the award was presented to the nation's most outstanding player; however in 2009 the recipient list was changed to only include shortstops. Past winners include Major Leaguers Jedd Gyorko (2010), Brad Miller (2011), Alex Bregman (2013), Trea Turner (2014) and Dansby Swanson (2015).
