Match Preview: No. 18 Kansas
Sep 15, 2018 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies attempt to become the first team in the nation to log 10 wins in 2018 as the Maroon & White host the No. 18 Kansas Jayhawks in a 1 p.m. contest Sunday at Ellis Field.
The Aggies' 9-0-0 record out of the gate matches the best start in school history. Texas A&M started 9-0-0 in 1996 and matched it 1997.
The Maroon & White boast a school-record 24-match unbeaten streak with their last loss coming at Auburn (0-1) on September 15, 2017. The run is two games shy of the SEC record set by the Florida Gators in 1998-99.
Texas A&M has spent a majority of the 2018 campaign in an enviable position. Over the course of 810 minutes of play, the Aggies have trailed for just 9:03. The Maroon & White have owned the lead for 512:10 and action has been tied for 288:47.
The Aggies have 13 set-piece goals on the season. The tally includes five free kicks, six corner kicks and two penalty kicks.
The Aggies own a 14-3-2 (.789) edge in the all-time series against Kansas. Last season the teams played in Lawrence with the Maroon & White notching a 5-1 victory with goals by Emily Bates, Haley Pounds, McKayla Paulson and Cienna Arrieta, as well as an own goal.
Kansas is 6-0-2 on the season. The Jayhawks boast a pair of 1-0 wins over ranked opponents, including then-No. 18 Pepperdine and then-No. 25 Butler. Kansas also has wins against South Dakota State (3-0), Oregon State (3-0), Utah (2-1 - ot) and Saint Louis (3-2). They have played Oregon (1-1) and Cincinnati (0-0) to draws. The Jayhawks' smothering defense has held opponents to just 15 shots-on-goal in eight matches.
The contest will be available for viewing on SEC Network+ with David Ellis (play-by-play) and Jeff Given (color) handling the call. SECNetwork+ provides events to SEC Network subscribers through WatchESPN and the ESPN app on smartphones, computers, tablets and connected devices (Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). The game will also air on 102.7 The Zone locally and RadioAggieland.com worldwide.
