Men's Golf's Smith, Phillips Finish Top 10 At Olympia Fields
Sep 16, 2018 | Men's Golf
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill.- Texas A&M's Brandon Smith and Chandler Phillips posted top-10 finishes to lead the No. 4 Aggie men's golf team at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invite.
"I'm really proud of Brandon and Chandler," said Texas A&M head coach JT Higgins. "Brandon played outstanding all three rounds, and Chandler came to play today. He battled and ended up having a good showing."
Smith completed a strong tournament, tying for fourth with a 2-under 208, four strokes behind individual champion Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State (204/-6). Smith shot a final-round 1-over 71 on the par 70 / 7,281 North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club, the host of the 2003 U.S. Open. Smith, an All-American a year ago, has finished 11th-or-better in six of his last seven tournaments, dating back to March.
Phillips carded the Aggies' low round on Sunday with a 2-under 68, moving 11 places up the leaderboard to tie for 10th place at 1-over 211, notching a total of 13 birdies, the second-highest total in the field. Phillips, a two-time All-American, has now registered 23 Top 10 finishes in 41 career events.
Texas A&M finished seventh in a field that featured 10 Top 25 teams, shooting a 25-over 865 after a third-round 11-over 291. No. 1 Oklahoma State won the tournament with an 11-under 829.
"We had two guys finish in the top 10, but we didn't even really compete, and that's really tough to swallow," added Higgins. "We made enough birdies that we should have had a good tournament, and should have been able to challenge the leaders. We had a trouble putting the ball in the fairway off the tee, which led to almost a direct correlation with bogeys."
"Olympia Fields is too good of a golf course to not have a little bit better focus, and a little better control of the ball. We got some work to do, but we will address those things when we get back, and get ready for the next one," Higgins said.
Dan Erickson posted a 4-over 74, tying for 42nd with a 11-over 221. Walker Lee tied for 53rd at 15-over 225 with a final-round 8-over 78. Josh Gliege shot a 9-over 79, tying for 70th at 24-over 234.
The Aggies return to action on September 24-25 at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by UAB.
