No. 4 Men's Golf Starts Shoal Creek Invitational Monday
Sep 23, 2018 | Men's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The No. 4 Texas A&M men's golf team tees off at the Shoal Creek Invitational on Monday, with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m.
"This is a new event for us, but Shoal Creek is a major championship venue so I know the boys are looking forward to facing that challenge," said Texas A&M head coach JT Higgins. "Anytime you can tee it up on a great course, against quality opponents, there's some excitement around the event. Throw on yesterday's trip to Bryant-Denny Stadium to watch the football team play Alabama and it should be a good week."
The 54-hole tournament begins with two rounds Monday at the par 72 / 7,300-yard course that hosted the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championship.
Georgia Southern, High Point, Kansas, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Lipscomb, Louisiana Tech, North Florida, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama and No. 5 Vanderbilt join hosts UAB and the Aggies in the 14-team field.
2018 All-Americans Brandon Smith and Chandler Phillips return to the Texas A&M lineup after strong showings at Olympia Fields, another major championship host course, last week. Smith led the Aggies at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational with a 2-under 208, tying for fourth. Phillips picked up the 23rd top-10 finish of his career with a 1-over 211 to finish tied for 10th.
Dan Erickson, who posted four top five finishes and a 72.36 stroke average a year ago, also returns to the lineup for this event.
New to the lineup this week is Reese Ramsey, who is making his season debut after a freshman campaign where he averaged 73.67 strokes per round. Freshman Sam Bennett, the 2018 4A Texas State Champion, is making his collegiate debut.
