Faa-Hviding Wins Twice in Waco at the H-E-B Invitational
TULSA, Okla. –Four Aggie Women's Tennis student-athletes are set to begin play at the 2019 ITA Women's All-American Championships in Tulsa on Saturday. A&M's Dorthea Faa-Hviding earned a pair of wins in Waco at the H-E-B Invitational on Friday.
"Playing in the All-American is quite an honor for our group and with that comes along some very strong competition," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "All four of our student-athletes have tough matches tomorrow, but we want to play the best players in the nation. We are accustomed to those challenges with our SEC slate and also our challenging non-conference schedule."
In the Sooner State, No. 112 Tatiana Makarova, Lucia Quiterio, Renee McBryde and Riley McQuaid are set to begin play in the prequalification rounds of college tennis' largest fall tournament. Makarova is set to take on Karine-Marion Job of Kansas State, Quiterio will oppose Luna Dormet of Ohio State, McBryde is set for a showdown with Polina Kozyreva of Syracuse and McQuaid will test her game against Akanksha Bhan of Columbia.
The tournament begins with singles pre-qualifying draws on Oct. 5 and 6 before advancing to qualifying play (Oct. 7-8). The main draw opens Oct. 9 and concludes with the singles and doubles finals on Oct. 13.
In Waco, Faa-Hviding, the tournament's No. 7 seed, defeated Laura Rijkers of Arkansas in the first round. The Stavanger, Norway native, bested Carolyn Ansari of Auburn in the second round. The A&M junior is set to take on top-seeded Ashley Yeah of Illinois Saturday in the quarterfinals.
"In my first match my opponent never gave up so I had to have great focus closing out the match especially since it was my first match of the year," Faa-Hviding said. "It felt great to be on court competing again. It was good getting that first match under my belt. In the second match, there were several momentum changes, but I was able to stay focused and win the big points. Overall I thought it was a really good first day and I'm excited to get back out there tomorrow."
