The Davis Duo Reunites on the Court
Nov 29, 2019 | Volleyball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - A sister's bond is one like no other, but to Lauren and Morgan Davis, sharing a bond on the court together is something they will cherish forever. The sisters have memorable moments of the two years they played at Bishop Moore High School, both years winning a state championship.
"Not only playing with my sister, but the rare opportunity of playing with her in two state championships," said Lauren. "It's definitely something I will never forget."
Morgan is currently a junior entering her third season for the Aggies. She is joined by her younger sister Lauren, who is a freshman for the Maroon & White.
Morgan has always had a specialty of embarrassing her younger sister. Lauren admits that Morgan has always been the more affectionate one and will go out of her way to hug and embarrass her whenever the opportunity arises. Their relationship is unique, but very special to them.
"In high school, whenever I would see her at school and pass her in the hallway, I would always scream her name and tell her how much I loved her in front of everyone," said Morgan.
Morgan played volleyball and basketball throughout high school, but decided to pursue volleyball, with plans of playing collegiately after graduating.
"I love being able to celebrate a point that your team got together," said Morgan. "Experiencing that with your teammates, which is some of the main memories I have of playing volleyball, are those celebrations. It has definitely drew me and kept me playing all these years."
Morgan's recruitment process began first, with an official visit to College Station, Texas.
During the visit to Aggieland, Texas A&M sparked interest for the Davis family, even for her younger sister Lauren.
After a few visits to different schools, Morgan committed to Texas A&M in 2016, making College Station her home for the next four years.
As a few years passed, it was time for Lauren's recruitment process to begin.
"I ended up making varsity and starting my freshman year," said Lauren. "I dedicated myself and dedicated a lot of time in eighth grade to making varsity as a freshman. It's what made me not have any other idea for my future."
Although she had experienced the recruitment process first hand from her sister, making a decision wasn't easy for Lauren. She stayed away from the thought of joining her sister at Texas A&M, admitting Morgan was the only con on her list, loving everything else about Aggieland.
Never in her wildest dream did Lauren think that she would have the opportunity to join her sister on the court once more.
After completing several visits, she had to make a decision. While boarding the plane to return home to Orlando, Fla., she sent a text to both of her parents with a thumb up emoji, making it known that she had made her decision and would commit to Texas A&M.
"It was funny because they would inch these things into my mind about [A&M]," said Lauren. "They were super supportive and made it clear that where I went they would support me and be a fan."
Now that Lauren had shared the news to her parents, it was time to inform her sister, Morgan, who was returning home for the holidays.
"I put on a Texas A&M shirt, walked into the living room and then started making cereal," said Lauren.
Morgan noticed Lauren acting a little weird, and had asked her if she made her decision yet. Soon after, Morgan realized what was going on and screamed with excitement.
"Morgan became emotional after putting it all together and expressing how happy she was," said Lauren. "It was an exciting time."
The Florida natives and sisters would officially call College Station, Texas home, together.
Steve and Kristi Davis have been a part of this journey with their girls every step of the way. Both of them wanted Lauren and Morgan to go to the same school together, so when it happened, their mother shared her perspective.
"We didn't know if it would ever happen again, so to be back in this place is pretty cool," said Kristi. "We just feel blessed. We love the atmosphere, the traditions, and the core values."
The sisters are thankful for everything their parents have done for them and to live out their dreams here at Texas A&M.
"They have given up so much for me to be here, and I wouldn't be here without them," said Morgan. "They have been what has kept me playing volleyball and loving the sport for so long."
When Lauren arrived in College Station this summer, Morgan went out of her way to make sure that her move was as smoothly as possible.
"Being away from each other for the past two years, made the transition that much smoother having a little piece of home already here," said Lauren.
Both sisters agree that their relationship has changed since being in College Station together.
"We butt heads a lot, but it's in a good way," said Lauren. "I know she will always care for me. She can also be kind of hard on me when she tries to play the mom role, but it is all for good reason. I love her."
Morgan has been a mentor to her younger sister her entire life; she has shared how much Lauren has impacted her thus far.
"We have this funny relationship, and we truly love each other and we want what is best for the other," said Morgan. "I couldn't imagine not having her in my life or having her here. Not going to college with her would absolutely break my heart. She did have a pros and cons list and I was her only con. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's so us and I love her."
Morgan has been grateful for her time here [Texas A&M] so far and the opportunities that have come along with it.
"Aggie volleyball has made me into the person I am today," said Morgan. "I have learned so much and growing up you are always told you become the person you are in college. You'll learn all these things along the way. I can thank Aggie Volleyball for that, for truly changing me into a better person."
Looking back at the three seasons she's been a part of, Morgan's favorite memory always goes back to the Penn State game her freshman year.
"That was the first game I remember playing in, that was big," said Morgan. "The 12th Man and the experience of playing top schools is something we all dream of."
The 12th Man has become something special to the freshman as well, as she experienced it for the first time in Reed Arena this season.
"It is such a cool thing to have a community so invested in the success of athletes and students all across the board," said Lauren. "Being able to come out and know you are supported by so many people is unbelievable."
Lauren is already making a lasting impression. The freshman outside hitter amassed 19 kills for a career-high during the Aggies' last home game of the season against Ole Miss last Sunday.
She is not hesitant to share how much her teammates have already impacted her time here; the team's chemistry is evident on and off the court.
"I don't know what it is about it," said Lauren. "I have never been so comfortable with a group of people in my life. Just coming in, it was so natural."
Morgan is so proud of how far her younger sister has come and what she is doing on the court this season.
"She deserves it more than anyone I know," said Morgan. "She puts in so much time and it's so nice to see it being shown off here."
Lauren is soaking up the two years she gets to be in Aggieland with her sister. The two share a bond that could not be replicated.
"My sister and I are very different people," said Lauren. "She is by far one of the most hardworking people I know and she's always supportive."
The Davis Duo has a relationship like no other and will cherish this chapter in their lives forever. The sisters will play in their home state on Saturday, Nov. 30 when the Aggies take on No. 15 Florida to conclude the 2019 regular season. First serve is set for 3 p.m. (CT) in Exactech Arena.
