AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 24 Texas A&M men's tennis team opens Southeastern Conference play at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center Friday at 3 p.m. (CT).
"It is exciting getting to start SEC play, but it is always a big challenge in this conference to play on the road," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "The season starts over tomorrow with everyone entering SEC play with a 0-0 record. As it turned out, we are happy we got a couple of indoor matches under our belt in the past week with the chances of playing outdoors tomorrow not looking good. As a team, we are looking to build on our recent success."
The Maroon & White return to the courts after capturing wins against Lamar and No. 45 Tulsa Tuesday. The Aggies picked up a 6-1 triumph over the Cardinals at the Bryan Indoor Tennis facility before trekking up Highway 6 to Waco and defeating the Golden Hurricanes. 5-2, at Baylor's Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
On the heels of his stellar play last week against Tulsa and Arizona State, A&M sophomore Barnaby Smith earned SEC Player of the Week honors. Smith earned a pair of crucial singles victories and the Aggie's first ranked doubles victory of the spring. Additionally, the High Wycombe, England native, captured an impressive three-set victory over the Sun Devils' Justin Roberts, ranked No. 97 nationally.
Texas A&M boasts four student-athletes in this week's Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Top 125 National Singles Rankings. Junior Valentin Vacherot re-entered the rankings at No. 47 this week to lead the charge for the Maroon & White. Joining Vacherot in the Top 125 are No. 66 Smith, No. 105 Austin Abbrat and No. 121 Carlos Aguilar.
Smith is a perfect 6-0 this spring and is riding a seven match win streak. Abbrat, a freshman from Spring, Texas, has won seven of his last eight matches. Aguilar, from La Paz, Bolivia, has earned four wins on the top two courts this spring.
The Aggies lead the all-time series against the Tigers, 6-3, after winning the most recent match up, 4-3, to finish the regular season a year ago and clinch Texas A&M's first undefeated SEC record SEC play in any sport. After earning the doubles point the Aggies secured the win with singles triumphs from Patrick Kypson, Arthur Rinderknech and Jordi Arconada.
Following the trip to Auburn, the Aggies complete the SEC opening road stand at No. 20 Alabama Sunday at noon.
