COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 2 Texas A&M Equestrian fell to No. 1 Auburn, 12-8, Friday on Senior Day at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
"It's a bitter sweet day. It's mind blowing that it has already been four years with these seniors because I feel like they were just on their recruiting visits. This group has been instrumental in leading the team and making it what it is today," head coach Tana McKay said. "The meet didn't go the way we wanted but we had some solid rides and still came away with two Most Outstanding Players (MOPs) so I am still really proud of where they're at."
In the day's first event, Equitation over Fences, Rebekah Chenelle earned a point for the Aggies after outscoring Caitlin Boyle by a 30-point margin, 85-55. Haley Redifer topped Ashton Alexander, 91-82, notching MOP honors.
Redifer's score of 91 ties for the third-highest Equitation over Fences score in program history and is the highest mark by an Aggie in the discipline since Alex Desiderio tied the school record in 2017.
"Haley Redifer has been an incredible freshman rider. She keeps getting better and is going to be an incredible collegiate rider for the rest of her freshman season and into the next three years," assistant coach Abby O'Mara said.
After Auburn scored the first point of Horsemanship, Sarah Orsak added a point for the Maroon and White with a 76.5-73.5 triumph over Kara Kaufmann. Ashley Davidson followed suit and defeated Kelsey Jung, 76-67.5, earning her second MOP of the season.
Texas A&M (8-4, 2-4 SEC) went on to take Reining, 4-1. Marissa Harrell led the way with a score of 70, bettering Blair McFarlin's 67. The Aggies tallied back-to-back points as Kalee McCann defeated Betsy Brown, 68.5-65.5 and Darby Gardner outscored Deanna Green, 70.5-65.5. To conclude competition, Courtney Yohey earned another point for the Aggies after recording a 72, topping Ali Fratessa's 69.5.
The Aggies return to action against Baylor on Saturday, March 9. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco, Texas.
